When you're part of something meaningful, you're more willing to go through the stress of what it comes with. (Storytime) When we first moved into my neighborhood, I was 21, married for only 6 months with no kids, and also...we moved into a brand new neighborhood with only 5 buildings and no shuls. Thankfully, we were close enough to a different neighborhood that had shuls, but we wanted to start something in the neighborhood. And that's when I started..... ....learning a lot about life:) What do I mean? Suddenly I was surrounded by people who were older than me, more established, and had a LOT of different views and opinions. But we all wanted the same thing. A shul in the neighborhood. It started with one shul, then another, then another, and then I finally found the one that I connected to for the most part. For the most part.... But it wasn't it. A few years in, a bunch of my old friends started moving into my neighborhood and the first thing that came to mind was, "OMG let's start a shul". It didn't EXACTLY happen overnight, but here we are, 3 years later, and we have a shul. Was it or is it easy? No. Is it worth it? Yes. Are most nonprofits like this? Yes. Do they always get along perfectly? No. Is fundraising a very big issue to keep it all going? Yes. Is there a way to run an annual campaign to cover most of all of your annual costs? Yes. My shul did it. We used the CauseMatch platform and a coach (the coach is the reason we exceeded our goal - use one). We were all excited and passionate about it because we were all a part of it. Meet Hilary! Another wonderful Director at Large on our Board of Directors. What drew you to being on the Board of Directors at VBIS? The passion and level of engagement that’s demonstrated by each of the Board members I had met. They made me feel inspired and excited to be a part of something magical in the work that VBIS does for the community. As someone with a very long history of concussions, I can completely appreciate the need to amplify the work that this board and organization is doing, and I’m super stoked to contribute what I can to help make this happen. What is your favourite part of being on the Board of Directors at VBIS? Getting an opportunity to work alongside pretty amazing and brilliant human beings! I know my time on the board has just started, but the time I’ve spent with the team so far – I’ve been nothing but absolutely impressed with how they have chosen to show up for VBIS. What is the most important thing you learned volunteering at VBIS? How no two brain injuries can look the same and how personalized modalities of care can really change someone’s life after brain injury. That’s why it’s so important to hold space for people to share their stories – so that we feel seen, heard, included, and valued. What is a fun fact about you? I love paint-by-number canvases. What is the value of ”Take Your Daughter to Work Day? We think it is education and empathy, so the child knows what the parent does daily, but it is so much more. It instills lifelong work values. Meahgan Gibson attended a “Take Your Daughter to Work Day” at Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. To this day she reminds me of a few choice words I stated during a staff meeting but she also pursued a career in Leisure and Hospitality. More importantly she picked up values like; everybody is critical to success (especially the lowest paid hourly associates), every person has a story, treat people with dignity and respect, and if they have a name tag, user their name. Grow by trying new things that others shy away from. Powerful words are “thank you” and “can you help me”, and assisting others even if you do not have time.  Today this was in my feed. I had no idea she was working on this.  Biscuits and socks, who knew? But more importantly, a young professional (from a generation many professionals belittle) leading a project that reflects well on the brand and does good for the community. Also hats off to Dennis Pfaff, Maple Street Biscuit Company and Cracker Barrel for creating an organization culture where young professional growth occurs. Take your daughter to work and as a leader, your relationships matter more than you know. #cio #leadership
