⚠️⚠️⚠️ 🌐Someone might assume that the catastrophes happening today are not actually part of a cycle, but just random events. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, as all the changes on our planet are occurring according to a strict pattern, just like in previous cycles of catastrophes of 12,000 years. ❓How did scientists realize that global climate changes occur on a 12,000-year cycle on the planet? Modern scientists can reconstruct the Earth’s history by - studying ancient ice layers, known as cores, - examining rock formations, fossils, and various soil layers. All this material is like the planet’s chronicle, valuable records of how the Earth’s climate has changed over millennia. Thanks to these studies, scientists have realized that the changes occurring on our planet today have occurred 12,000 years ago.

For the first time, the recovery of unique geological samples combined with sophisticated modeling provides surprising insights into when and where today’s Antarctic ice sheet formed, as an international research team with RWTH participation found out. 👍 Around 34 million years ago, our planet underwent one of the most fundamental climate shifts that still influences global climate conditions today: the transition from a greenhouse world, with no or very little accumulation of continental ice, to an icehouse world, with large permanently glaciated areas. The root for this could lie in its formation, as the team led by the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung has now discovered: sediment samples from drill cores combined with complex climate and ice-sheet modeling show that permanent glaciation of Antarctica began around 34 million years ago – but did not encompass the entire continent as previously assumed, but rather was confined to the eastern region of the continent (East Antarctica). It was not until at least 7 million years later that ice began to advance towards West Antarctic coasts. The new study, published in the prestigious journal Science, highlights the significantly different responses of East and West Antarctica to external forcing. The findings of the international research team are critical for understanding the extreme climate transition from the greenhouse climate to our current icehouse climate. Importantly, the study also provides new insight that allows climate models to simulate more accurately how permanently glaciated areas affect global climate dynamics, that is the interactions between ice, ocean and atmosphere. ⚡ 5 Turkish Scientists Do Research in Antarctica - Scientists from 5 Turkish universities collect data on the rapid consequences of global climate change in Antarctica and the Arctic Region

Here at BAS, we’ve always known that Antarctica is important – after all, what happens in Antarctica affects us all. But what if we told you the icy continent has been shaping our planet over millions of years..? New research has shown that the expansion of the Antarctic ice sheets and the associated growth of Southern Ocean sea ice triggered to the mid-Pleistocene climate transition (a period of over 500,000 years where the behaviour of glacial cycles fundamentally changed.) Using climate models, scientists discovered that as the Antarctic ice sheets (and sea ice) expanded, the Northern Hemisphere became cooler and wetter – ultimately resulting in the rapid expansion of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets and this huge climate transition. I wish Linked In would allow me to gift this article because it is so important to ponder. Strong new research shows a sustained earth temperature that we will reach in the next 5YEARS will likely lead to the collapse of the Western Antarctica ice sheet. That would create a 4-5 meter rise in sea level which would submerge the bottom third of Florida and most cities on the Gulf and Eastern coasts of the US. The global impact would dwarf that. If you do not think climate change is THE issue of our time you are mistaken. We must build on the historic investments and diplomacy of President Biden’s administration and quickly. If we elect a “drill, drill, drill” President whose party has promised a return to fossil fuels it is nothing less than mass suicide. Join groups working for policy change at scale at local, state, and national levels like Third Act, Sierra Club, etc. support education programs that help those employed in fossil fuels find new jobs. I saw the impact of climate change directly while in Antarctica this year and talked with scientists there. This new research continues the trend of each new finding showing us it’s worse than we thought. But with the right global leadership and the US leading the way we still have a chance to avoid complete catastrophe.

The latest IPCC Climate Report highlights the irreversible impacts of past and future greenhouse gas emissions, particularly on ocean, ice sheets, and global sea levels. Mountain and polar glaciers are expected to keep melting for decades or even centuries, while rising freezing levels in mountain regions will change snow and ice patterns. The report predicts decreasing snow cover in the European Alps below elevations of 1500–2000 meters throughout the 21st century.
