"The great promise of embodied AI is that it can transform the things we do and allows us to do so much more with our lives. (…) There’s no better example than self-driving cars. This will give people the first chance to experience embodied AI, one that can deliver goods and move people around in a way that is more safe and sustainable than transportation as we know it today." Great to see our What's Next series launch today, chatting to Wayve CEO Alex Kendall. Excited to be exploring the possibilities emerging deep-tech innovations hold, the positive impact they can have on our health, livelihood and planet, and how we mitigate the risks. Let's get excited about What's Next.
Introducing What's Next, our new video and podcast series examining the most exciting emerging technologies and the people behind them. In our first episode, James Wise chats with Wayve's co-founder and CEO Alex Kendall to unpack what embodied AI means for transportation, how they met in a small Cambridge dorm room, and what drives Alex. 🚗 💡⚡ Watch the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/e4ewpbp7

It's Earth Day 🌏 🌱 🦒 A great opportunity to celebrate some of the fantastic work happening in the Balderton Capital portfolio. Congratulations to Vestiaire Collective for launching their latest impact report, making the case for circularity by exposing the true cost of fast fashion.
🌍 THE WORLD CANNOT AFFORD FAST FASHION! Today, we are pleased to announce the publication of Vestiaire Collective‘s 2024 Circularity Report. This year, we wanted to redefine the way we see the true cost of an item. Cheap initial prices, constant promotions, rapidly changing trends… Fast fashion isn't just environmentally harmful, it is a financial trap too! What have we learned? 💥 Across all categories, preloved curated fashion items on Vestiaire Collective are 33% more affordable per wear in the long run. 👗 Pre-loved dresses are worn 8+ times more. Cost-per-wear of $1.56 vs. $5.66 for fast fashion alternatives. 👜 Pre-loved designer bags offer ~72% lower cost-per-wear vs. fast fashion alternatives. 🕰 Our Collective wears their pre-loved pieces almost 2x more than fast fashion owners wear theirs, and keep them for 31% longer. “In today’s climate of inflation, it is obvious: neither people nor the planet can afford fast fashion. This report sounds the alarm on fast fashion’s devastating impact, and should be a wake-up call to all to end overconsumption and overspending.” - Fanny Moizant, President and Co-founder of Vestiaire Collective "Fast fashion is a false economy. Buying cheap fast fashion is deceptive, as in the end you end up replacing items again and again. We champion circularity as it not only benefits consumers’ wallets, but also protects our planet. Pre-loved luxury items are more cost-effective over time with a longer lifespan. Our mantra ‘Think First, Buy Second’ makes more sense than ever." - Dounia Wone, Chief Impact Officer of Vestiaire Collective #VestiaireCollective #ThinkFirstBuySecond #Circularity #CostPerWear

At Balderton Capital, we are incredibly excited by the opportunities brought on by the transition to a low carbon future and the need to adapt to a changing climate. It's been amazing to work alongside colleagues from the investment team Daniel Waterhouse Magda Lukaszewicz Solène Brébant Laura McGinnis Shikha Ahluwalia spearheading our thinking and investment theses in this space. But we mustn't think that we are completely exempt from climate risks either. It was a pleasure to speak to Freya Pratty at Sifted about our recent (and ongoing) work assessing the physical and transition climate risk exposures of our portfolio under different climate scenarios and time horizons for the first time. Climate scenario analysis is a powerful strategy tool to bring many "what ifs" to the fore, making us more agile, resilient and simply better investors for it. https://lnkd.in/efRCBfJv

It hasn't gone unnoticed that the world's average temperature reached a new high on Monday 3 July, topping 17 degrees Celsius for the first time. On that same day, we hosted our first Climate Fresk workshop at Balderton Capital. This 3-hour workshop involves exploring and unravelling the causes and effects of the climate crisis, based on IPCC reports (the most reliable source of climate science and data), in a game format, before engaging in a pragmatic and open discussion about climate action. It was great to bring together members from our investment, finance, operations, marketing and EA teams to collectively deepen our understanding of climate change and walk off feeling both emotionally scared and (even more) committed to action. Proud to have joined the 1.1m people globally who have been through this workshop so far and to contribute to this grassroot movement born out of France. Many thanks to Sam Baker our facilitator. To anyone interested in finding out more or running a workshop, do get in touch with him!
