When it comes to memory performance and density, the only way is up. We’ve talked about HBM3 before, but plans for HBM4, GDDR7, DDR6, LPDDR6 an PCIe7.0 are also well on the way. Simply because changes are necessary to achieve the higher data transfer rates in the modulation process of the data signals that AI servers require. In addition, some generation changes are linked to each other. For example, future servers with PCIe 6.0 or 7.0 will also require significantly faster RAM so that the higher PCIe data transfer rate can be fully utilized. As hardware manufacturers are gearing up for ever faster memory types and interfaces, heise online gives an up-to-date overview with predictions from it’s semiconductor expert Christof Windeck. A good read. Check it out here: https://bit.ly/3VNSuLP #semiconductor #memory #DRAM #NAND #flashmemory #technologyinsights #weknowmemory

DDR6, the next generation of RAM, is being developed and expected to be finalized next year. It promises significant speed improvements over DDR5, with data transfer rates reaching up to 17,600 MT/s and potentially even 21,000 MT/s. This is a major leap compared to the current limit of around 8,400 MT/s for DDR5. The launch of DDR6 is expected in the second half of 2025. Internally, DDR6 will have a different design compared to DDR5. DDR6 memory chips will use dual 12-bit data channels instead of the dual 16-bit channels found in DDR5. This doesn't mean slower data transfer though, as the faster transfer rate compensates for the narrower channels. As a result, a single DDR6 module can achieve an effective bandwidth of nearly 47 GB/s, which is 40% more than the fastest DDR5 module available today. This boost in bandwidth is significant for system RAM, especially for laptops and handheld gaming PCs that rely on LPDDR5X for a balance between power consumption and performance. DDR6 will provide a much-needed performance improvement for these devices. #chips #memory #memorychips #ddr6 #hardware #computerhardware #semiconductors #semiconductorindustry #semiconductormanufacturing #technologynews
