Looking forward to speaking next week at the Business Group on Health 2024 Annual Conference. Join us on April 10th at 4:00pm for an insightful discussion on #healthcareinnovation. Session title: Driving Health Care Innovation Through Partnerships: Lessons from Walmart. Session description: Every employer supports its workforce by offering diverse yet comprehensive health and well-being benefits. And when you are the world’s largest private employer, that responsibility looms even larger, requiring creativity and strategy in designing programs and choosing partners. In this discussion, Walmart will share how it approaches partner relationships that drive health care innovation, as well as a roadmap that you can adapt to apply best practices and improve collaboration with partners and leadership in your own organization. You'll hear from Greg Goggans (Walmart), Lisa Woods (Walmart), Jaclyn Wainwright (Aircare Health), Fahimeh Sasan, DO (Kindbody), and our very own Daniel Stein, MD, MBA (Embold Health).

Just announced: WalMart Health shutting down Walmart Health--all 51 health centers and virtual health to close. My colleague and friend Robert Huckman at Harvard Business School just shared this news, and it's unfortunate. As he, Brad Staats, and I wrote about in Harvard Business Review last month, retailers could be strong complements to traditional health care delivery systems if they partnered successfully. The retailers offer accessibility, convenience, and strong consumer behavior insights, while the delivery systems that are involved in risk-bearing value-based contracts could do with the help in preventing unnecessary (re)admissions. Together, the two could do a lot to advance health and, in turn, even reduce costs of care for society. The situation is concerning. The retail pharmacy sector is largely transactional, focused more on billable actions than patient-centered care, mirroring the criticisms often levied against healthcare in general. While it's true that the essence of all business is transactional, the issue at hand is about who is best equipped to bring transformative changes to the healthcare industry. Recent incidents like pharmacist walk-outs exemplify the ongoing turmoil on the retail pharmacy frontline. Coupled with deteriorating conditions, facility closures, downsizing, and a lack of innovation in pharmacy processes and delivery, these factors don't inspire confidence in retail pharmacy's ability to spearhead a healthcare transformation. Hospital systems, on the other hand, stand a better chance of revolutionizing the prescription delivery system compared to the likelihood of retail pharmacies successfully overhauling healthcare.

Last week, Walmart, the biggest retailer in the United States, announced it is shutting down its health centers nationwide - a clear sign of a broken health care system that prioritizes profits over people. And helps explain why people have so little trust in the system. At USofCare, we believe in a health care system that's equitable and accessible for all Americans, regardless of their financial status. Our Founder and Principal Consultant, Mike Rawaan shares his thoughts on some of the critical mistakes made by retailers like Walmart CVS Health, Amazon, Walgreens and others in entering the U.S. #healthcare market, which has lad to their failures. This presentation covers topics such as: 👉 Lack of in-depth understanding of the U.S. healthcare system 👉 Lack of research in healthcare consumer behavior 👉 Inadequate analysis of revenue models 👉 Business case built on invalidated assumptions 👉 What is retail's role in healthcare in the future (spoiler alert: it's #valuebasedcare) #Retailers have the assets to drive a lot of value in healthcare, but they were misled in thinking it was going to be as easy as standing up clinics in their stores or offering #telehealth. Traditional economic models are simply inadequate when building a healthcare business, and success depends on a deep understanding of the stakeholders, and their incentives, in the broader ecosystem you are a part of. #retailhealth #primarycare #urgentcare #covid19 Walmart Health Walmart Health & Wellness Walgreens Healthcare Solutions CVS MinuteClinic VillageMD Oak Street Health One Medical Kroger Health Best Buy Health Target #healthsystems #medicareadvantage #medicare #medicaid #pharmacy #aco #vbc #hospital #pac #casemanagement #emergencyroom #medication #Prescriptiondrugs #Vaccination

The recent shutdown of Walmart's health clinic network highlights a recurring theme. Many non-traditional entrants encounter financial and operational challenges in the healthcare sector. Promises of affordable and accessible care must be aligned with a real understanding of the healthcare ecosystem. The situation emphasizes the value of expertise regarding the clinical environment when navigating this complex field. #healthcare #business #healthcareinnovation #healthcareleaders #healthcareonlinkedin
