The American College of Physicians just updated the pharmacological management of Type 2 diabetes based on the newer medications: Adding a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor or glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist to metformin and lifestyle modifications in adults (strong recommendation; high-certainty evidence). Use an SGLT-2 inhibitor to reduce the risk for all-cause mortality, major adverse cardiovascular events, progression of chronic kidney disease, and hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. New Research: Can SIRT1 Protect Against Metabolic Issues in Obesity and Diabetes? 🤓 👩⚕️ 👏 Our latest research, "Inhibition of de novo ceramide synthesis by Sirtuin-1 improves beta-cell function and glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetes", published in #CardiovascularResearch, explores the link between obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We found that ceramide buildup disrupts insulin production and worsens CVD risk, while Sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) may offer protection. I was happy to be part of this research. The STEP-HFpEF DM trial demonstrated that semaglutide improved body weight, systemic inflammation, and heart failure symptoms in individuals with obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and type 2 diabetes, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic option for HFpEF by targeting both metabolic and cardiovascular risks alongside SGLT2 inhibitors. Happy to share this beautiful work from Damien DENIMAL (PADYS group). They show that plasma ceramide levels are associated with liver steatosis in patients with type 2 diabetes, independently of traditional risk factors for NAFLD.
