Celebrate alongside industry leaders at our Believe Ball! There are less than two months until our signature Believe Ball returns for its fourth chapter in Philadelphia, the city where Emily became the first pediatric cancer patient treated with CAR-T therapy. On September 27, 2024, patients and caregivers from around the world will be joined by esteemed guests and elite leaders in the advanced therapies community. This year, it is our privilege to welcome Stephan Grupp, MD, PhD; Carl June, MD; and Bruce Levine, PhD as honorary co-chairs of the Believe Ball. They are each distinguished leaders in CAR-T cell therapy research and development and we are enormously grateful for their outstanding commitment to our mission. “Dr. Grupp, Dr. June and Dr. Levine’s pioneering research and groundbreaking work transformed the field of cancer immunotherapy,” said Foundation Board Chair and Interim Executive Director George Eastwood. “We look forward to connecting them, and other leaders in the advanced therapy sector, with the patients and caregivers they are helping at this year’s Believe Ball.” Don’t miss the chance to join us for this inspiring event and to support a brighter future for more patients and families. Sponsorship opportunities are still available, and your contribution can help us turn Emily’s survivor story into tens of thousands of survivor stories. I had an illuminating chat recently with Charlotte Coles, Professor of Breast Cancer Clinical Oncology at the University of Cambridge, UK. She chaired The Lancet’s Breast Cancer Commission released this week, which highlights global breast cancer inequities and presents a roadmap to tackle these urgent challenges. It’s an honour to have this one-to-one time with experts, especially when they are brilliant and down-to-earth like Prof Coles. Several points she made stood out for me: “There are a lot of current misconceptions that breast cancer is solved, and it isn't.” “Often, you see a piece on breast cancer and 95% is focused on curing early breast cancer…we talk a lot about the challenges around metastatic breast cancer but have a really positive outlook about the future. We hope to be able to cure some people with metastatic breast cancer, which has been thought to be impossible in the past. But we want to make sure that we alleviate suffering for all, and don't abandon anyone. It's about changing the whole mindset” around metastatic breast cancer. “Prevention is incredibly important”. But “it has to be a united policy change because in terms of prevention, it's very much been directed at individuals, which you could see almost like blame...But if you actually link it with policy, then that makes it much easier for those individuals to be able to modify their lives”. For breast cancer clinicians, Coles hopes the Commission can inform and galvanise them to “realise what's happening globally. Let's not be complacent and let's try and think about what we can do. But rather than as individual health-care practitioners, what we can actually do as a body, and how much further we can go if we work together”. https://lnkd.in/eps3iiCN #breastcancer #metastaticbreastcancer #inequity #globalhealth #lancet

Surgical interventions offer significant benefits in managing esophageal #cancer. Recent advancements in surgical techniques, such as laparoscopy, have made ‘esophagectomy’ - the surgical removal of the esophagus or its segments – less invasive. However, the risk of surgical complications and consequent death during #esophagectomy remains high. Do surgical complications also affect the patients in the long-term? In a study that was recently featured in the European Journal of Surgical Oncology, researchers explored long-term outcomes for patients experiencing various levels of surgical complications during esophagectomy. Remarkably, researchers found that the severity of complications during esophagectomy had no impact on long-term survival rates. This finding holds significant implications for post-surgical care in individuals with esophageal cancer and may guide clinicians in making critical treatment decisions. For more leading-edge research on cancer treatment, read this article in the European Journal of Surgical Oncology: http://spkl.io/60464fJk4 How can post-surgical care be improved for esophageal cancer patients? Laura Scherer, PhD, a CU Cancer Center member, received an R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) aimed at understanding why some women when told their risk of developing breast cancer, question the assessment. "We want to look at presenting the information differently, perhaps giving it a different context and providing information that will help people understand and accept the information they’re being provided with," says Scherer. Award-winning precision health & integrative medicine doctor, scientist and educator; Director & Head of Integrative Cancer Care at Synthesis Clinic; Co-founder of the Oncio app; Co-Chair of the BSIO Education Committee
I am delighted to share that our book, 'Integrative Oncology in Breast Cancer Care', co-authored with the wonderful Dr Penny Kechagioglou is now published and available for purchase as an e-book and in hardcover format. It is wonderful to be holding this book in our hands after months of hard work. Integrative Oncology (IO) is an evolving evidence-informed field of medicine aimed at supporting people with cancer throughout the cancer care continuum, and this book provides a robust introduction to integrative oncology and a practical toolkit for clinicians working with breast cancer patients. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women globally with growing incidence, and people with breast cancer are the most frequent users of integrative oncology practices. This book addresses the whole person journey from prevention, to diagnosis, treatment and survivorship and is written by clinicians for clinicians. The approaches and tools discussed can help guide clinicians on how to support better quality of life, improve patient resilience, minimise the side effects of treatment and optimise clinical outcomes for people impacted by breast cancer. We hope you enjoy this introduction to the subject and that it supports multidisciplinary breast cancer teams in delivering whole person care from prevention through diagnosis and treatment and beyond. "Unfortunately, pediatric cancer research is woefully underfunded. It gets less than 4% of all cancer research dollars available, and almost none of that goes to rare types, like DIPG. Which means the treatment protocol in 1997 when Tim died, and in 2022, when Zoey was sick, are the same—steroids, radiation, and chemotherapy, all in the desperate hope that they'll buy enough time to get to a miracle clinical trial. And yet, 25 years apart, both died within months of diagnosis." Brian Westerhaus, Founding Partner at Pioneer Management Consulting. Please join our efforts to help.
