I took my 5-year old to the zoo today for a mommy-and-me day. What does this have to do with anything? Bear with me; I’ll explain 🐻 First and foremost, we had so much koala-ity 🐨 1:1 time 🤣 Without his little brother there, he got to pick everything we did and saw. I took the time to unplug and be fully present. No following up with clients or checking emails. We had no agenda. Our only goals? ✅ Spend time together ✅ Have fun By letting him explore the zoo and decide what we did for most of the day, we discovered a new exhibit I had never seen on our previous visits. This experience got me thinking about how we approach our audience in our content strategies. When we cater our writing or messaging to a large, non-specific audience, it can often be too broad and general. However, when we consider a single person's perspective, we can find hidden gems and value offers in our products or services. Just like my son led us to a new, exciting exhibit at the zoo, focusing on the needs and desires of one specific person can uncover unique insights and opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked. While it's cool to discover something like this after a day with my son, it's even more fun and important to remember to experience the world like a child—full of wonder and without the stress and obligations we experience as adults. Sometimes, the best insights come from seeing the world through fresh, curious eyes.

I am a huge fan of Priya Parker. Her year-end newsletter included a call-back to this post from March of last year about the importance of how we open a gathering. Much like my post yesterday about the wavy perforation in Charmin toilet paper, she notes how "small, simple shifts can have an outsized impact on your entire gathering." That matches my own experience. The first five minutes of an event set the tone for me and indicate whether this is a space for thinking with diplomatic, polite interaction or perhaps a vulnerable space for candid conversation and deeper connection. On this fourth day of the new year, I wonder if we can bring this same intentionality to the year ahead. How do you want to show up for the rest of this first week of 2024? What is the container you want to create for the interactions you want to have with family, friends, or work colleagues? How will you spend your time? Which gatherings will you attend? With whom do you want to gather? Small changes matter. So does starting things with intentionality. Happy 2024!
