Silicon Valley is at it again, igniting a funding firestorm that's catching attention. Yesterday, startups within the Valley have collectively secured over $150 million, showcasing the relentless drive and innovation at the heart of SV. Notable Deals: •  Bugcrowd successfully completed a Series E funding round, raising $102 million and bringing their total capital to $182 million. We are working on this problem for startups and SMBs. Small companies need to understand their risk landscape but do not usually have the skills, resources, or awareness to identify, prevent, or detect risk. Cybersecurity is both broad and deep, and lots of vendors promise the world without scoping their value within the context of a mature security program. IT service management companies may be in the best position to build security programs for SMBs; they already have the trust of their clients and full access to make all the necessary technical changes. If they add security acumen and GRC expertise to their repertoire (as opposed to just offering EDR and disaster recovery tabletop exercises), I think a meaningful shift toward a more secure world would result.

I get approached by a lot of startups promising to fix my woes, but most of the problems I deal with in security today aren't VC-level problems. The downside of this is that there are a ton of problems in the security space that are too niche for anyone to fix at scale. There's a catch-22: The problems are too small for VC-backed companies The risk area is too large for small companies The security space has too many requirements for bootstrappers. One of the problems we have as security teams is that we like to reduce risk surface area; less is more. We also generally can't trust bootstrapped startups with our most sensitive data because they are too small, can't afford SOC2 or security tools, are a reliability risk etc. Most of these problems we fix ourselves with internal engineering teams, even though they are problems experienced by multiple companies, so there's a ton of duplicated effort across the industry. Realistically, though, small companies done right can be just as secure as big companies. Sure, they don't have dedicated security teams or tools, but starting a secure company has never been easier. Functionally, you can live off the land for a long time with a small select set of tools. I'd like to see a future where we make it easier and cheaper for bootstrappers to get started so I don't have to fix the same problems over and over again.

How will fintech recover from its funding slump in 2024? To encourage more investment, industry freethinkers might hype up popular trends like AI and ML. Or they might suggest firms should “diversify their services”. Or they could beat the drum of cybersecurity – and say data privacy must be number 1 on the fintech firm’s priorities list. Look, all these things could increase the probability of getting your fintech firm the funding it needs. But, at the end of the day, funding mainly comes from the investment fund – not the efforts of the startup. I hate to sound like I’m not waving the flag for the industry, but – in a world where thought leaders and influencers jump on every tech trend that comes out of Silicon Valley – maybe we all need a reality check. If present investments are failing, it’s probable that there might just not be the cash for them in the first place. And with everything that’s going on at the moment – geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty – that doesn’t and shouldn’t come as a surprise. #funding #fintech #startups
