Texas added a record amount of battery energy storage to the grid in 2023 – and more is on the way. 🔋 As the second-largest state in terms of battery power capacity, Texas keeps doubling down on utility-scale storage to add more reliability to the grid during periods of high energy demand. Great to see battery storage potential …here is a Friday thought .. The consensus is that we will need a lot of gas plus CCUS to decarbonise power by 2035, but CCUS is frankly nowhere and is rapidly running out of road (happy to be convinced otherwise. So would we be better going harder for long and short storage which has a readymade project pipeline - plus interconnectors - and accept some unabated gas on standby - for 2035? And meanwhile invest more in Hydrogen power generation ? We may not achieve full power decarb but we could probably get down to 20g CO2e per kWh and meet the CCC targets. Views?

14 GW of additional battery energy storage projects are in the pipeline in Great Britain that could begin commercial operations by the end of 2027. However, we project that just 11.5 GW of this new capacity will actually come online by then. The pipeline is a list of battery projects in Great Britain holding long-term contracts such as Capacity Market agreements and Pathfinder contracts. Each project has its own planned operational date. 2023 was a record-breaking year for battery buildout but only half of the capacity in the original pipeline actually came online during the year. In Q1 2024 just 184 MW of new build battery storage became commercially operational. The additional capacity from the pipeline could take total operational capacity in Great Britain to 6.6 GW by the end of 2024 and 18 GW by the end of 2027. However, based on actual buildout rates total operational capacity is projected to reach 5.1 GW by the end of 2024 and 15.4 GW by the end of 2027. The slowdown in buildout means that total battery capacity will be below three of four scenarios set out in ESO’s Future Energy Scenarios until at least 2026. As of Sunday, grid operator Electric Reliability Council of #Texas (#ERCOT) reported more than 8 GW of total installed energy storage resource capacity within the grid. A new projection by battery storage analysis platform Modo Energy forecasts that the BESS buildout within ERCOT could double to more than 18 GW by the end of 2025. Battery storage and solar capacity are seen as ideal tools for on-site power and microgrids, since energy storage can balance and smooth the intermittencies of renewable energy. Earlier this summer, the U.S. Department of Energy announced $450 million in funding for projects to support power resiliency by combining residential solar and batteries in Puerto Rico.

AEMO has today published an update to the 2023 Electricity Statement of Opportunities (ESOO) report. Considering only existing, committed and anticipated projects, the ESOO’s ‘Central Scenario’ forecasts reliability risks above the relevant reliability standard in all mainland regions over the next decade and reinforces that urgent investment is needed to manage forecast reliability risks in the National Electricity Market. While this assessment does not include federal or state government energy programs or 280 gigawatts of proposed generation and storage projects, AEMO CEO Daniel Westerman said: "Reliability improves when considering actionable transmission projects – those listed to proceed as soon as possible in the Draft 2024 Integrated System Plan – and when forecast grid support from consumer energy resources are applied. “Adding new generation and storage projects through federal and state government programs then shows that reliability risks have the potential to be managed within relevant standards over most of the next 10‑year horizon,” he said.
