This year’s 27th Milken Institute Global Conference, titled “Shaping a Shared Future,” was a great example of why the gathering is so valuable. We discussed the challenges the electric industry faces to accelerate the clean energy transition and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Overcoming these challenges is more urgent than ever because of the increased load demand from AI and data centers, so we need an “all-hands-on deck” approach across industries and stakeholders. At Milken, I saw that camaraderie and collective spirit on display — an encouraging sign for our clean energy future. Thought I'd take a step back in time. The attached animation was created in 2016 for a presentation to the Office of Science and Technology Policy at the White House, at the end of the Obama administration, in cooperation with Keith Henson and Peter Garretson. Space Solar Power is a big idea. It's a complicated idea, and one that has been bumped around by brilliant folks like John Mankins, Ian Cash, Paul Damphousse, Paul Jaffe, M.V. "Coyote" Smith, Keith, Pete, and many more. It's a technology that is hard, but not for the normal reasons. The technology is relatively straight forward. It's a question of scale, complex logistics, and jurisdictional questions. And a huge up front investment. My role has been helping to get the idea 'out there', having produced a few of the seminal pieces describing the ideas. Including having the privilege of doing a presentation with Buzz Aldrin in 2007, and, over the years working with some of the most brilliant minds of our time. (Including those mentioned earlier, and more.) One of the biggest problems of the tech is helping people - notably in government in this case - bridge from a position of relative ignorance to at least understanding why. How can be a lot more complicated, but in megascale engineering projects, that's usually a #money problem. That speaks to the 'secret sauce' I bring. I understand the fundamentals of the technologies, and have even contributed to a few papers on the subject beyond art alone. With that understanding, I can then create a narrative that can push projects forward. I'm currently looking for some new and cool projects. In the last two days we did the kick-off meeting of the #euEIC Mid- to long-term and systems integrated #energystorage Pathfinder challenge #portfolio. The 32 representatives of the 9 projects belonging to the technological categories of the Electrochemical, Thermal, Chemical looping and storage of energy carriers and Thermomechanical energy storage discussed with experts coming from @JRC, CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, Future Cleantech Architects and scientific organizations how to accelerate their technology innovation journey through sharing scientific and innovation expertise as well as facilities and equipment. Take home messages are: 1) collaboration is needed but to implement it you clearly need to demonstrate that it is a win-win approach; 2) tech to market plans needs to be strategically designed since day one of the deep tech innovation journey; 3) to achieve the ambitious goal of implementing the energy transition we need to design the proper policies and to develop technologies that are environmentally and economically sustainable.
