Regis, H. A. (2018). Cultivating Ideal Citizens in the Age of the Global at Texas Southern University: Honors Academics and the World African Community. Journal of Pan African Studies, 11(2). Abstract: This report, based on a paper the author presented at the conference of the National Association of African American Studies in Tampa, Florida in June 2015, describes the academic core and related components of the program conceived in the Thomas F. Freeman Honors College at Texas Southern University, a historically African American institution in Houston, Texas. This report on the program, with its aim of cultivating students into “ideal citizens of the Age of the Global,” elaborates the raison d’être for the program; describes the three themes and two skills in the academic core of the program; describes the related instructional, observational, experiential, activities and services aspects of the program; describes the relationships between the program and its associated instructors, its associated departments, the University, and the community; clarifies the implicit and explicit commendations and recommendations of the program; and finally concludes that the program meets the imperatives of African American, world African, and overall world community, honors units. 

It’s been over 4 decades since Dr. W. Edwards Deming published his (repackaged) seminal work, Out of the Crisis, in which he delineated the now iconic 14 Points that outline the basic steps toward developing a quality process and institution. While many businesses have implemented the tenets founded on the work of Dr. Walter Shewhart, Dr. Deming, Dr. Joseph Duran, Motorola’s Six Sigma, et, al. and seen their quality, company morale, and ensuing profits soar, the American K-12 education system has remained mired in the most arcane and insane Top-Down, Taylorist, Prussian model that, like the old Playtex Living Bra commercials from the ‘70’s, was created to lift and separate. Join us in assembling one million businesses, parents, teachers, students, and thought leaders (whose voices have been silenced) in abandoning what is not working in favor of an approach that has a goal of success for all, not just some.
