In Austin (TX), less traffic enforcement due to a shortage of police officers appears to be a major reason for an increase in fatal traffic incidents. Similar findings of fewer traffic citations and more traffic deaths also occurred in Dallas, San Antonio and Seattle. After an extensive study, auditors in Austin concluded that more traffic enforcement correlates with fewer traffic deaths. Traffic enforcement in Austin is handled by the Police Department’s Highway Enforcement Command, which has seen a reduction in its force by 100 officers. The number of citations issued by Austin police has dropped 70% since 2019, and traffic deaths increased by 63%. https://lnkd.in/gS49ZuQp #behindbadge #police #lawenforcement #trafficenforcement

How many people have to be raped, assulted and murdered before NYC fires the DA who will not follow the law? According to Adams, a small number of individuals are responsible for a disproportionately large number of crimes. Adams was quoted as saying, “38 people committed assaults on transit workers. Out of those 38 people, they committed 1,126 crimes in our city, recidivism crisis. And that’s the same with when you look at shoplifters, 542 people committed over 7,600 crimes in our city.” These statistics reveal a disturbing trend: those who assault transit workers average nearly 30 crimes per person, while shoplifters commit around 14 crimes per person. This cycle of repeat offenses not only puts a strain on law enforcement resources, but also poses a significant threat to the safety and well-being of the city’s residents.

The current sentencing for crimes related to stealing rail infrastructure may not be sufficiently severe to effectively deter other criminals. It could be argued that harsher sentences should be imposed in order to send a stronger message to potential offenders. While a 5-year jail term may be considered a significant punishment, it may not adequately reflect the gravity of the offense. Stealing rail infrastructure can have far-reaching consequences, impacting not only the efficiency and safety of transportation systems but also posing a threat to public welfare.

"Longer response times are logically related to widespread staffing declines in big city police departments. A recent survey of Police Executive Research Forum members found that half of agencies had fewer officers than 4 or 5 years ago and nearly three-quarters of agencies had a decline in applications. NYPD declined from over 36,000 officers in 2019 to about 34,000 in 2022. Police departments in San Francisco and New Orleans have shrunk by 17 and 18 percent respectively since 2019, and Seattle’s police department shrank by over 25 percent between 2019 and 2022." #safety #security #innovation #monitoring #emergencyresponse https://lnkd.in/gqiph4Z4
