Only 16.5% of UK engineers are women    As we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day - a global celebration of the work and achievements of women engineers, we ask, how can we attract more women into the industry?      At MSC, we are proud to support and champion the vital role that women play in shaping the future of these key sectors. Engineering and manufacturing have long been male-dominated fields, but we are thrilled to see more and more talented women breaking down barriers and forging successful careers. Their innovative thinking, technical expertise, and problem-solving skills are invaluable assets that are driving innovation and progress across industries.     While progress has been made, there is still work to be done to close the gender gap and inspire the next generation of female engineers:     In the UK only 16.5% of engineers are women, despite making up 47% of the overall UK workforce.     Women account for just 16% of engineering and technology undergraduates in the UK.     We must continue to encourage and support women to pursue careers in engineering. By tapping into the full talent pool, we can drive innovation, problem-solving, and progress for the benefit of all.     Engineering offers so many incredible opportunities for women to make a real impact. University of Newcastle , Newcastle University Women in Engineering(NUWiE) was born out of a crucial need to address the underrepresentation of women in engineering disciplines. In 2014, a group of pioneering female students identified the gender disparity across engineering fields. In anticipation of International Women in Engineering Day tomorrow, Enginuity is excited to share the outcomes of a significant roundtable discussion hosted by our CEO, Ann Watson! 💙 Senior representatives from across the STEM industries gathered to explore strategies for closing the skills gap and driving gender diversity in engineering. 🌟INWED 2024: International Women in Engineering Day Yesterday, 23 June marked International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), which recognises the incredible contribution of women engineers to the profession and encourages more girls to pursue careers in engineering. 👩🔬 We introduce Roberta Angelini, one of our Project Leader and first hired female engineer. On June 26th, International Women in Engineering Day, we want to celebrate all the women who are working in this field or pursuing a career in engineering. Although women have been underrepresented in the technical industry in the past and unfortunately still today, there are more and more women who are choosing to start a career in this field, paving the way for future generations. Petra Beckmann, training supervisor at Flender, shares this opinion: “I think it's important that women also go into the "more typically male professions", as this means there is much more diversity in the company. Women also often have a different perspective on things and therefore approach tasks differently.” Women are just as capable as men in solving complex technical problems and developing innovative solutions. It is important that we, as a society, recognize and support the talents and abilities of women in engineering. Therefore, we encourage all women to get involved in this field and pursue their dreams. Whether you are interested in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or another technical discipline, your skills and enthusiasm are invaluable. “The image of the engineering profession in people's minds needs to be changed. We work in interdisciplinary, intercultural teams, you get to work with lots of people and develop new things together. It's very exciting and enriching and there are so many different tasks, there's something for everyone.” says Petra Wiersch, engineer in the sector of bearings at Flender. She also says that when she decided on a career in engineering, she was sure that she could do it and took the liberty of just trying it out. It was a good decision, which makes her happy. As we celebrate Diversity and Inclusion Month, it's important to highlight the need for a more diverse engineering sector. Currently, the engineering workforce is made up of 90.7% males and only 7.8% Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) individuals. This is in stark contrast to non-engineering occupations within the engineering sector, where women constitute 46.9% of the workforce and BAME individuals account for 12%. These statistics make it clear that change is necessary to create a more inclusive and diverse engineering community. Why does this matter? It's not just about doing what is right, but what is smart. A diverse workforce brings fresh perspectives, enhances productivity, and provides new insight into markets. In the realm of engineering education, incorporating diversity and inclusion standards is not a mere option—it's a necessity. This involves: - Increasing enrolment of students from underrepresented groups in STEM subjects - Integrating culturally responsive teaching methods - Highlighting the achievements of engineers from diverse backgrounds To all lecturers, and colleges: You have the power to make engineering education a beacon of diversity and innovation. Skills shortages and the reasons behind them are a subject we talk about regularly on Skilfully Speaking. A lack of accessible opportunities and inclusive workplaces are often a barrier to bridging the gap, but progress is slowly being made. Engineering is one such sector. There are still not enough women choosing engineering as a career. Celebrating Women in Engineering: Breaking Barriers and Achieving Equity June 23 marks International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of women in engineering. Organizations like the Society of Women Engineers and Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide are leading the charge in promoting gender equity and encouraging more women to pursue careers in engineering. Despite significant progress, women still face numerous challenges in engineering. In the UK, women make up only 16.5% of professional engineers, with even lower percentages in fields like mechanical engineering and computer science. Report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics further breaks down the numbers. It reveals in greater detail how women are underrepresented comprising: 8.5% of mechanical engineers 17.4% of aerospace engineers 27.9% of chemical engineers 17.1% of civil engineers 15.7% of computer hardware engineers 8.1% of electrical and electronics engineers 25% of industrial engineers, including health and safety 14.9% of all other engineers Moreover, the average income of female engineers are 3.5% more than male engineers and average age of female engineers if about 37 while that for male engineers is 42, at the same more number of female engineers occupying higher hierarchical work positions than male engineers. Women in engineering have made notable patent contributions, such as India's first-ever all-women crew flying a long-haul flight from San Francisco to Bengaluru in 2019. This achievement highlights the capabilities of women in engineering and underscores the importance of promoting equal opportunities and challenging gender stereotypes. As we celebrate INWED, it is crucial to recognize the ongoing efforts of organizations like SWE and WIDS in fostering a more inclusive and diverse engineering community. By supporting women in engineering and providing them with the necessary resources, we can create a more equitable and innovative industry that benefits everyone.
