With the Olympics underway, I’ve got a couple of tips to help your office banter. Firstly, if you’re not supporting countries that win lots of medals like the US & China, memorise this important phrase: Medals per capita. This levels the playing field a lot. Right now Mongolia is top of the table. Secondly and more specifically when you’re getting too much banter from your British colleagues. The Euro’s just finished where England were runners up, they competed as England though, right? Then the Olympics come around and they become Super Friends with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. So as an Australian, I also count countries under the Godwana continent that Australia was part of. That means you add Australia’s medals to Africa (all the African countries), South America (yep all of those countries too), New Zealand, Arabia and the Indian Subcontinent (not just India but the surrounding countries of the region). Just because our countries drifted apart over millions of years doesn’t mean we stopped being Super Friends. I hope these two tips help in your Olympic office banter or at least rile up an overly serious British colleague.

With the 2024 Paris Olympics now underway, and an estimated total investment of circa €9 billion, many Australians are eager to take advantage of the global coverage and buzz surrounding the event. Some of us might even be tempted to have a punt. In this article, Michael Cossetto and Robert L. point out the risks of doing two things that some businesses in Australia are likely to do during the Olympics. Firstly, some businesses are going to use Olympic designations without permission and secondly, wagering service providers are going to offer in-play betting on Olympic events. Doing either of these things could land them in serious trouble. What's new this week? #SportIntegrity #BeActive 🏃♂️ Ministers approved a resolution on the EU’s Work Plan for Sport (July 2024-Dec 2027). The plan will focus on three main priorities: 1. Integrity and values in sport; 2. The socio-economic and sustainable dimensions of sport, and; 3. Participation in sport and health-enhancing physical activity. Resolution here ➡ https://shorturl.at/byKT1 🚵♀️ Ministers also approved conclusions on the contribution of self-organised sport to supporting active and healthy lifestyles among Europeans. ⚽ The conclusions encourage Member States and the Commission to implement policies that foster the practice of self-organised sport, including in areas that lack sufficient sports facilities, as well as to encourage Europeans, via awareness campaigns and the development of suitable infrastructure, to engage in self-organised sport. Deputy Director Culture, at the Centre for Defence Leadership & Ethics (CDLE), Australian Defence College.
Exciting news! Our article, 'The Australian breaking scene and the Olympic Games: The Possibilities and Politics of Sportification' has been published in the GHHS Journal! Co-authored by myself and Dr Rachael Gunn, one of the breakers representing Australia in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, our ethnographic research examines the impact of breaking’s inclusion in the Olympics and addresses some of the ways in which Australian breakers have responded to this development. We argue that breaking in the Olympics isn't simply understood as either ‘good’ or ‘bad’, but rather that there are a range of different concerns breakers have expressed. While some view the Olympics as an opportunity for wider recognition, others express concerns about the growing influence of transnational commercial organisations and institutional governing bodies. This raises questions about the increasing sportification of breaking culture and its potential consequences for local Australian breakers, particularly regarding self-determination, agency, and spontaneity. If you want to know more about our findings, check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dXshxxwu #BreakingCulture #Olympics #Sportification #AustralianBreakers #GHHSJournal

Interesting that Slovenia, New Zealand and Ireland have such relatively high representation. Europe is generally high, which makes sense given the nexus of the Olympics, the type of sports, the access, facilities and general lifestyle. Note that smaller nations will appear higher on this table because each nation can only send a limited number per event. And different nations have different priorities and sporting preferences.

The European Olympic Committees - EOC and the European Commission are united in their dedication to the European Sport Model, which is characterised by its pyramidal structure, openness, and solidarity. This model is vital for promoting healthier, more active communities while respecting the unique nature and autonomy of sport. Central to our efforts is the focus on athletes, whose perspectives are crucial in shaping decision-making processes. We are committed to enhancing access to education and training for athletes, and supporting dual career schemes. Sport organisations across all levels, from grassroots to elite, play a key role in ensuring accessibility, especially for children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. They also contribute significantly to community building and the development of young athletes, officials, and referees. Financial solidarity schemes are essential, allowing revenues from elite events to be reinvested in grassroots development and education, ensuring a robust and supportive ecosystem for sport throughout Europe. Together, we are committed to preserving and advancing the European Sport Model, ensuring that sport continues to be a force for positive change. Find out more about our joint commitments in the Arrangement for Cooperation (https://shorturl.at/oV7NR).
