Far too many people struggle to find and stay in decent, affordable homes. Evictions destabilize families. Unsafe conditions disrupt people’s lives and health. Tenants struggle to assert their rights. These harms disproportionately impact women of color and their children, the product of racial injustice in housing policy. Often compounding these historical injustices is the power imbalance between landlords and tenants in housing court. In our housing resource hubs, we help residents get the crucial public benefits, and services, and information on their rights that they need and guide them through the process of navigating the housing court system. This webinar series will train housing advocates, tenant leaders, and direct service providers to register, educate, and mobilize voters in their communities.

On January 22, join SPUR and Partnership for the Bay's Future for a panel discussion that aims to shed light on how a race-conscious approach to policymaking can potentially solve the current housing crisis, by addressing the root causes of racial disparities in housing access, affordability, and quality. The Harwood Institute’s research and on-the-ground initiatives in communities suggest a community needs a web of fundamental structures, networks, and norms—what we call Public Capital—to work effectively. One key element of our Public Capital framework is “A Shared Purpose for the Community.” A community’s shared purpose sends an explicit message about people’s aspirations and reinforces that everyone is working toward a common goal. Sustainable urban development is only possible and just if it is driven by the assets and needs of communities. Urban regeneration has a long track record of the opposite. Great to see activist researchers and practitioners come together to both figuratively and literally create common ground

Organizations across the city came together to share lessons learned and reflect on what is connect struggles in Birmingham. What we found was common ground. We face similar challenges. We are exhausted, we lack time and resources, and we live a city whose future is imagined based on projections that have already proven unviable. Communities are now urged to take over services, with the voluntary sector being called upon to respond to the crisis. Yet, at the same time, communities are not allowed to actively and meaningfully participate in decision-making. Decisions about places, communities, services, and the environment are made without a clear democratic mandate. Power is opaque, and scrutinizing how decisions are made remains difficult. Consultation remains tokenistic, and decision-making is a black box. Our response is a demand for our public services to be funded, to reclaim public space and the commons and assert the power of communities in shaping decisions. This is for both the present and the future. The demands of struggles across the city form the coordinates of what a just future could look like.
