AUCKLAND, New Zealand: The number of children in New Zealand needing dental surgery is growing for a number of reasons, among them poor prevention, increased consumption of sugary food and drink, and too small a workforce. Mid-level providers are the future of preventative care in dentistry.

Demystifying the current challenges with NHS dentistry through conversations between my dad and I!   Patient expectations versus what the NHS system covers and how it is funded are miss aligned. My dad got absolutely no sympathy from me, in fact he got an ear full. Dentists work incredibly hard having spent years gaining their qualifications. We must not under value their work. The fact that the current NHS contract is not set up in the right way to pay for their work is best explained by the example of patient A needing 3 fillings and patient B needing 10 fillings. Both patients pay £71, the dentist receives the same payment for both treatment plans – clearly the time spent on patient B is far greater than patient A! At mydentist (UK) we support our clinicians to pursue the careers that are right for them. Which usually involves a mix of NHS and private dentistry. I remain hopeful of reform in the future! The government announcement of £20k golden hello’s in locations classified as “dental deserts” is not a new idea. Put simply if it is not a location a dentist wishes to live £20k will not attract them. __________________________________________________ Dad “I went back to the dentist and I need another root canal treatment, I can’t believe I have to pay again.” Me “Two separate root canal treatments 9 months apart are two different treatment plans, don’t you think the dentist is entitled to get paid for their work? It isn’t a charity!” __________________________________________________ Dad “I had my check up today, what does the dentist do for my £26?” Note the previous principal used to complete a scale during every NHS check-up. Me “The dentist is checking the health of your teeth and gums, recording your oral health in the system, offering advice and suggesting any options around treatment you need. The dentist isn’t getting paid £26, they might be receiving £12 or £13 for the check-up.” Dad “Where does the rest of my money go then?” Me “How do you think the Nurse, Receptionist, rent, utilities, systems and materials are paid for?!” ____________________________________________________ Dad “I went to the Hygienist for the first time in 74 years. She said see you again in 6 months. I thought no you won’t, I am not paying for that.” Me “If its recommended you keep going to the hygienist don’t you want to look after your oral health and prevent your teeth from falling out?” Dad “They will probably fall out anyway.” #dentistry #patients #reform #access #opportunities

The surprising (and maybe not so surprising) area health systems are looking to expand? #Dentistry Health Systems like #Northwell have started acquiring dental practices & #MemorialCare plans to open 25+ integrated clinics (including dental) in the coming years. Oral health clearance or follow-up care is needed for a vast number of #cardiovascular #transplant & #oncology patients so it makes sense for health systems to get involved. Questions remain over funding & linking care for these initiatives.
