#applicationfriday | This week's focus is on a vacuum gripper with integrated air channels that helped our customer SSI SCHÄFER achieve incredible productivity gains. Using the EOS P 396 system and PA 2200 material, the weight of the gripper was successfully reduced by over 70%, setup time was significantly reduced by 80%, and production time was increased by approximately 120 hours per year. The gripper procurement time has been reduced from several weeks to a few days, and the integration of functions has reduced assembly time and the number of parts from 18 to 6. This is a great eye-opener for the #3dprinting industry. Whilst 3D printing is great, and has some real advantages - so does injection moulding. The 3D printing industry often talks about part consolidation, complex geometries and that mass production is achievable - as if these things are only possible with printing. Yet here, from injection moulding, we have 2 parts combined (also with two different materials), with fairly complex features (like the screw thread and interference fit on the seals) produced in a hourly volume that would be impressive as a yearly volume in 3D printing. #manufacturing #additivemanufacturing
