European Private Equity deals ended 2023 stronger than expected. What is private equity (PE) you ask? It's the investment of equity capital in private companies. In a typical private equity deal, an investor buys a stake in a private company with the hope of ultimately realising an increase in the value of that stake. PE typically comes after #angelinvesting in the fundraising trajectory of a company. An excellent #Sussex example of PE is Cow Corner Investing. The PE market is one of haves and have-nots. While deal count may have increased slightly compared to 2022, add-ons accounted for the lion’s share, with megadeals at their lowest since 2014. In contrast, megafunds dominated a near-record year of fundraising—just five funds accounted for more than half of all capital raised. There is little sign the market will be more balanced in 2024, with exits expected to remain low, limiting the prospects for a more normalised fundraising cycle. Globally, 593 private equity funds raised $556bn last year compared with 1,137 funds that raised $549bn in 2022, according to new data from PitchBook.   The strong fundraising seen in 2023 despite a difficult macro landscape points to a shift towards private markets for many asset allocators.   With a challenging M&A environment, lacklustre IPO performances, increased need for liquidity, and rapidly changing technology, trading in private markets is gaining traction, and fast.   Read more about the data: https://lnkd.in/efAKKyBr   #PrivateMarkets #PrivateEquity #Fundraising

Each year, the PEI 300 ranking provides an overview of GPs' fundraising activities through a wide lens, examining capital-raising totals over the past five years' highs and lows. The top 10 alone raised $741 billion, up more than $10 billion from the previous ranking. Our ranking has risen by 11 places since the 2023 edition and being recognised as one of the Top 50 Private Equity firms worldwide is a significant milestone in Astorg’s growth journey. The Carlyle Group’s Global Investment Solutions segment raised $2.4 billion in Q3 2023, driven by the secondaries and co-investment strategies. In its earnings report, the firm shared return data of AlpInvest Partners Secondary Funds, which are led by chris perriello, Matthew Romanczuk and others. Carlyle Group CEO Harvey Schwartz said in the firm’s earnings call, “Primary across the industry is a little slower. Secondary activity is a lot higher. European private equity has had a subdued start in 2024, focusing more on strategic add-ons than mega-deals. Despite a 37.2% drop in deal value from last quarter, fundraising saw a record quarter, highlighted by EQT’s €22 billion flagship fund.
