Canada's performance again dropped in the Global Gender Gap Report rankings. At 36th place globally, we are behind Iceland (1), Australia (24), Mexico (33), etc. The good news: Canada's ranking in the Political Empowerment sub-index improved from 30th in 2023 to 27th. Very excited to announce the publication of a new article that I authored with Professor Denise Cuthbert and Associate Professor Ceridwen Spark ! 📚🎉 In this article, we explore the under-researched yet significant issue of navigating the division of domestic labour in the context of migration. Here we argue that while migration presents immigrant women with the opportunity to seek greater equality in the domestic sphere, their efforts to alter the unequal division of domestic labour are to a degree constrained by socioeconomic factors and gender norms. #migrantwomen, #divisionofdomesticwork, #genderequality, #africanmigrantwomen, #genderroles, #genderrelations

🌍 Celebrating and Empowering Women on the Move Did you know that women and girls make up about half of the world's 281 million international migrants? 💼 Empowering Economies Whether seeking economic opportunities, escaping conflict or climate change, fleeing gender-based violence, or pursuing education, migrant women play a vital role. They send remittances, support livelihoods, and contribute to thriving economies worldwide. ⏩ $647 billion was sent in remittances to low- and middle-income countries in 2022. 🚨 Challenges Persist Yet, gender-based discrimination persists. Happy #internationalwomensday2023 ! There is still a lot to do to foster women's economic participation and gender equality, even in developed countries. Our paper Female Migrants and Brain Waste- A conceptual challenge with societal implication was recognized as a top cited article by #Wiley . Of course that is a nice acknowledgement, but, it would have been better not to have this topic in the first place. Instead of brain waste, let's have flourishing women professionals! I grew up in a working class, migrant household, so tonight's #CSW68 event on "Advancing gender equality and women's empowerment in the context of poverty and migration" felt particularly impactful to me. The overall event discussed the value that migrant women bring, both to their home and migration country. It also questioned the financial and legal protections that are put in place for these women. Migration is often seen as a powerful tool for poverty reduction. Most of the times we think about this in terms of what migrant women are 'gaining' by moving from the global south to the global north. Yet at the same time, migrant women aren't seen as a profitable segment, which may lead to their exclusion from financial services. A representative from Women's World Banking showed an interesting case study that challenges this: Over 1.2 billion USD is sent home annually by Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand, over half of which are women. A second keynote speaker that captured my attention was the representative from the Women in Migration Network (WIMN), who put a strong case forward about the misconceptions we have about 'lower skilled, temporary workers' that migrate through short-term bilateral agreements. According to WIMN, these workers stay over 60 years in their migration country and do bring useful skills to their migrant countries. Such categories may be particularly harmful when considering labour rights and human rights. There's a lot more that was said during the event which a mere Linkedin post couldn't do justice, but hopefully this gives some food for thought Atonte Semira Tabitha Morton Rita Kastrati Petra Salarić Joyce Cheng Akua Opong CITP MBCS Hena Naranbhai Maria Rosa Torres Sejin Anjali Chorlton Maudlyn Akosua Awuku UN Women United Airlines UN Women UK #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #socialimpact

As we celebrate Women's History Month, we want to acknowledge the particular challenges faced by migrant women, girls and LGBTQI individuals. According to IOM - UN Migration, an increasing number of women are migrating independently from Central America and the Caribbean. Migration has the potential to create positive outcomes and contribute to women's empowerment. It can open opportunities for: higher income, asset ownership, self-esteem, decision-making power and new autonomy. On the other hand, gender and migration can intersect to produce negative outcomes, such as multiple forms of discrimination, exploitation, and stigmatization. One of the strategies put forward by the Global Compact on Migration addresses both gender inequalities and gender-based violence through national labor laws, employment policies and programs. This approach recognizes the independence, agency and leadership of women and seeks to reduce their vulnerability by increasing their access to labor markets. Learn more about how gender-based violence affects migrant women, girls and LGBTQI individual: https://lnkd.in/dGuDZKsk #immigration #womenshistorymonth #genderbasedviolence
