🚨Since our last #PrimaryProblem update, seven states (MD, NE, WV, GA, ID, KY, OR) held congressional primaries. So far in 2024, 17 states have held primaries, and just 4% of the U.S. voting age population has already elected 45% of the U.S. House. In MD, ID, KY, and OR, only 9.1% of voters chose 20 out of 22 Representatives, while nearly 3M were barred due to closed primaries.🗳 Tomorrow, more states vote. "With #affordability issues top of mind for #Canadians, poor #national #polling #numbers, the #IsraelHamas #conflict ripping apart the #Liberals’ #voter #base, and the rumoured #federal #candidacy of an #Ontario #NDP #MPP, a #byelection for the safe Liberal stronghold of #TorontoStPauls, Ont., could be a competitive three-way #race in which any #party could win, say #political #insiders and some #MPs. 'If the NDP is able to recruit a high-profile candidate, if the Conservatives put the resources in, it’s going to be very competitive. It’s going to be one to watch for sure,' said 📊 David Coletto 🌎, CEO of Abacus Data, in an interview with The Hill Times. Coletto said that, according to his January seat projections, this was a Liberal-leaning riding, but the governing party had only a four-point lead over the Conservatives. He said the model does not take into consideration the candidate profile, how a campaign is run, and current affairs issues like the Hamas-Israel conflict, which has sharply divided the Liberal voting coalition. By adding these three factors into the mix, the safe Liberal #riding is in play, and any of the three major parties could win, said Coletto... The most recent dynamic change that has made the byelection contest even more exciting is the rumored federal candidacy of #JillAndrew who represents the area in the #Ontario #legislature for the #provincial #NDP. In a brief phone interview with The Hill Times, Andrew did not offer a clear answer to the rumours that she could seek her party’s federal candidacy in the byelection. 'I don’t want to be interviewed on rumours and gossip. I’d prefer if the media reached out to talk about #affordablehousing and all the issues that are impacting us here in St. Paul’s,' said Andrew. 'But if I had anything to share, the first person who would know would be Marit Stiles, the leader of the Ontario NDP. So have a great day. Thank you for calling me all the way from Ottawa.' The provincial and federal riding boundaries are identical. Andrew has won twice provincially, in 2018 and 2022, albeit with a margin of less than three per cent each time. If Andrew does decide to run federally, she will have to step down as an MPP... Besides polling numbers and Andrew’s potential candidacy, two other factors are complicating the Liberal re-election in this riding. Both progressive and right-of-centre voters are unhappy with the government’s response to the Hamas-Israel conflict... Making matters more complicated for the Liberals are affordability issues, including #inflation and the cost of #housing, that are negatively affecting the party’s popularity across the country. 'It’s a competitive riding now,' said one Liberal MP. 'This should have been a safe Liberal riding. Not anymore.' As a responsible citizen deeply committed to the principles of unity and harmony, I strongly condemn the communal statements made by the Hon'ble Prime Minister. In a diverse and pluralistic society like ours, it is absolutely imperative that our leaders prioritize fostering inclusivity and mutual respect among all communities. It is disheartening to witness any attempt to polarize communities for political gains. Such divisive rhetoric not only undermines the fabric of our nation but also jeopardizes the peaceful coexistence we have worked so hard to achieve. I urge my fellow citizens to rise above communal divides and vote for unity, equality, and progress. Let us not be swayed by narrow-minded agendas that seek to exploit our differences for personal or political interests. In the upcoming elections, let our vote be a resounding endorsement of unity over division, of inclusivity over exclusivity. Together, let us strive to build a nation where every individual, regardless of their background, religion, or ethnicity, can thrive and contribute towards a brighter future for all.

Important changes

Some key takeaways: 1) Things have mostly stayed the same since the last provincial election in May 2023. The UCP leads the NDP by seven points and would win a majority if an election were held today. 2) The initial criticisms of Naheed Nenshi's NDP leadership bid do not hold water. He doesn't have a "Calgary problem." On the contrary, he adds supports the NDP in Calgary. This leads to the next point.... 3)....the criticism that Nenshi is seen as an interloper to the party also doesn't hold water. Our findings show he can retain more of the NDP base than any other leadership candidate - including sitting NDP MLAs. 4) None of these leadership candidates seems able to chip away at the UCP base. If the NDP wants to win the next election, it must either get current UCP voters to switch to its brand or inspire previous non-voters to get out to the polls and vote for change. https://lnkd.in/eDKFd9kC

The win in fortress Toronto yesterday for Don Stewart and the Conservative Party of Canada is indeed a fantastic result and a damning indictment of the record of Justin Trudeau, the Liberal Party of Canada • Parti Libéral du Canada and a very personal swipe at the divisive politics of Chrystia Freeland who spent a lot of time in the riding campaigning for her former chief of staff Leslie Church. So now, I’d like to ask the CPC: ”Congrats! What next?” I’m weird, I know. Besides keeping my eyes on the hockey game last night, I was glued to CBC’s coverage of the election even though I’m in Calgary and half country removed from from last night’s action. The CBC coverage followed the prescribed formula, but honestly, it was “somewhat” more balanced than expected. The talking heads spoke extensively about this byelection being a barometer of Canadians’ attitudes towards the L/NDP coalition and the result underscored that point precisely. They spoke about voters sending a message. Message sent! They also focused an inordinate amount of time on the likability of the leaders. They agreed that though all of the leaders are generally unlikable, Pierre Poilievre was particularly disliked. Though certainly this topic of coverage was anticipated, the coverage confirmed that the viciousness and the open vitriol directed towards Poilievre is 💯going to continue up to and throughout the next election campaign. So, what to do? Simply stated, it is time to pivot, to stop relying on the strategy of all-out attack and work towards messaging that establishes a hopeful CPC vision of Canada and, in doing so, proactively take the arrows out of the enemys’ quiver. They need to point to the CPC Policy Declaration (for those that haven’t read it, this document is very good! I will link to it in the comments), especially the sections related to healthcare, abortion and social issues and reinforce the fact that Poilievre and the CPC are decidedly centrist and not in any way the far-right zealots that the other parties and the media want them to be portrayed as. They need to openly and transparently censure any CPC MP or candidate that speaks of topics like abortion in ways that contradict the Policy Declaration - a declaration that each one of the MP’s and candidates must endorse in order to stand as a CPC member. The attack strategy has worked, the tide of opinion is decidedly moving pro-CPC and anti-L/NDP. In hockey terms, much like the Panthers last night, with the lead established, it’s time to start playing defence, protect that lead and bring home the next election. Poilievre himself employed this strategy in the leadership campaign when he went hard at Charest and Brown, established a dominating lead, then softened his messaging mid-campaign to focus on his brand, his philosophy, his vision for Canada.
