June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on a critical but often overlooked issue. Mental health affects us all, but men face unique challenges. They are less likely than women to seek help due to societal expectations and stigma. Men often feel pressured to appear strong and self-reliant. This can prevent them from reaching out for the support they need. But there's hope. By breaking the stigma and encouraging open conversations, we can support men in seeking help. Simple actions like talking with a friend, exercising, or seeking professional help can make a big difference. Together, we can make a difference. 💪🏼 PS: The data was collected in the US. The advancement of the internet has profoundly impacted mental health, offering both promising benefits and significant challenges. On one hand, it has democratized access to mental health resources, support networks, and self-help tools, enabling individuals to seek information and community with greater ease. On the other hand, the internet has also exacerbated issues like social comparison, cyberbullying, and digital addiction, which can contribute to anxiety, depression, and diminished self-esteem. Navigating these dual aspects requires a balanced approach, emphasizing mindful use, digital literacy, and leveraging online tools to support mental well-being while mitigating potential harms.

We made a mistake in our efforts to reduce the stigma around mental health. While our society has shifted towards a more proactive and supportive approach, encouraging people to seek help regardless of the severity or diagnosis of their issues, our current mental health system and our economy still operate reactively. Providers often have to justify and advocate for continued services after a crisis or diagnosis rather than offering preventive care-something has to continue to be “wrong” in order to receive care. This is why private companies make more innovative progress in our field than the institution itself. Don't get me wrong, we should continue this positive momentum! However, let's not mislead the public and set them up for disappointment. They must understand that we, clinicians, are often constrained by broken systems, helplessness, and burnout within them, and these systems don't incentivize or adequately support preventive care. There is a growing recognition of the importance of mental health across various sectors, including corporations,universities, and social activism. However, a critical issue continues to receive less attention: the mental health of men under 50. While many organizations actively participate in awareness campaigns throughout the year, June is specifically designated as Men's Mental Health Month. Yet, the conversation surrounding men's mental health seems to be lagging. The social stigma associated with seeking help for mental health disproportionately affects men. The perception of vulnerability and weakness associated with expressing emotions can lead to social isolation, depression, anxiety,substance abuse, and a higher suicide rate among men compared to women (1.8 to 4 times more frequent). To address this disparity, a multi-pronged approach is necessary. Firstly, breaking down the stigma surrounding men's mental health is crucial. Secondly, encouraging men to seek help needs to be actively promoted. This could involve creating safe spaces for open communication and offering accessible mental health resources. Finally, fostering a culture of empathy and support is vital. Stigma related to mental health challenges often has a self-perpetuating effect. Let’s talk about Men’s Mental Health Month. Why? Because statistically, men are less likely to talk about it themselves. A UK study published last year found that 40% of men surveyed about their mental health haven't spoken to anyone about their feelings because they are too embarrassed or feel there is a negative stigma, among other reasons. We have seen similar hesitation in the members we serve: While men and women face similar rates of loneliness, men are much less likely to reach out for help. Only about 1 in 4 Pyx Health users who decide to onboard are men. That delay in reaching out for help may contribute to a higher acuity of loneliness in men as well, with 15% of male Pyx users ranking at the highest tier of loneliness when they finally engage. Social stigma surrounding masculinity historically discourages emotional expression, making it difficult for men to acknowledge their loneliness or seek help. Limited social connections are increasingly a factor as well. Better understanding of these challenges helps us create safe spaces for open communication and provide resources that cater to the unique needs and experiences of all people.

12 months since my last post on what the data tells us about our New Year resolution intentions, how did we do in 2023? 🤷♂️ Well, according to YouGov, around 17% gave up on New Year's Resolutions within 1 month or less, with the most common response from 21% of respondents was them lasting 2-3 months. In 2024, 'Health & Wealth' 🏋♂️ 💷 are the key themes, and it's great to see prioritisation of mental health being a priority for over 25% of respondents. 🙌
