#MustangMonday Here's the latest Onaqui update: We’re preparing this Wild Mustang to get her hooves trimmed by our farrier. In the wild, Mustangs’ hooves naturally stay trimmed from walking on rough terrain. Now that she’s at our sanctuary, we’ll need to trim Onaqui’s hooves regularly, just like with our other equines. Our Equine Care Manager, Melissa, and Onaqui’s trainer, Sara Vanecek, demonstrate how we’re preparing for her first farrier visit: 1) We make noise with the rasp (hoof file) so she knows the scraping sound. 2) We pick her hooves. She’s used to us doing this now. 3) We file her hooves with the rasp. 4) We gently place nippers along her hooves but don’t trim them. This allows Onaqui to get used to the sensation of getting her hooves trimmed by the farrier. You’ll also notice in the video how Melissa lets Sara know what Onaqui is doing throughout the process. This helps keep Sara aware of Onaqui’s behavior so she can stop and move away if needed. Of course, Onaqui gets lots of praise at the end for doing so well! Group Housing in Equine Behavior Research Today's equine behavior research is looking closely at the way we confine horses in individual stalls. Especially in Europe, researchers are questioning the use of stalls at all. A long tradition exists there called “group housing,” especially for horses used in breeding. If group housing doesn't sound familiar, it's because its roots are European. More than 30 scientific studies have been conducted on horses stabled indoors living in communal groups instead of in individual stalls. Ten new studies have been published since the pandemic began, with more expected. So, should you “quit stalling?” Turning horses out together can make most horse owners nervous. Americans probably aren't ready to make the leap to Euro-style group housing, but plenty can be done in traditional barns to make stables more aligned with welfare principles and equine behavior preferences. In America, horses often live solo lives. They often spend more time with people than with other horses. A recent trend to build run-out pens out from individual stalls has been accepted as progress, but critics say they are not enough. WHAT IS NATIONAL HORSE DAY? National Horse Day is celebrated every December 13. It’s a day to remember the economic, historic, and cultural contributions that horses have made. Equine enthusiasts across the country will get together on December 13 to show their appreciation for these majestic creatures. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or have never been on a horse in your life, check out some ways you can recognize the day! HISTORY OF NATIONAL HORSE DAY In 2004, Congress designated December 13 as National Horse Day and, since then, Americans have been taking the day to celebrate and appreciate the role of the horse in not only helping our country become what it is today, but also its current role in the modern era.  Horses, in general, contribute roughly $9.2 billion to the US economy. Whether they’re helping plow fields; move food and supplies into rural areas; move livestock in ranches; or just provide sweet, thoughtful equine therapy; horses have woven themselves into the fabric of life in America. After the primitive Native American horses died out between 13,000 and 11,000 years ago, today’s wild-horse species were reintroduced to America by European colonists in the late 1400s. They’ve since flourished in the great plains and mountainous west, where wild herds’ thunderous hooves are still heard to this day.
