From June 10-13, these bright young minds gained valuable insights into the finance world, exploring roles in Treasury, Investments, and Accounting. By providing hands-on experiences and mentorship, we aim to inspire students from underrepresented areas in Chicago, aligning with EquiTrust’s mission to foster education and opportunity. Our interns had a chance to ask a group of CHS leaders some questions at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., in a recent panel event. Here is how I strengthened my Apprenticeship Applications. Experience—it's the golden ticket to unlocking career opportunities. How much did I have before 6th Form? Barely any Let me tell you, starting on the back foot puts you at a considerable disadvantage compared to the thousands of other applicants vying for the same roles. Recognising this gap in my applications was the first step. But the real challenge was finding a solution. I adopted the motto: 'too much experience is enough experience'. After all, why would you want to underequip yourself? While occasional office visits and online webinars offered some exposure, I needed experience with substance. That's where Forage came in. Last week I had the honor to welcome an incredible group of interns to Charlotte for the summer. The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance’s Young Professionals advisory board convened interns from many of our Alliance investor companies to build connections with each other and our region. The event was a walking tour of Charlotte’s SouthEnd which originated at the Vantage building (home to Grant Thornton (US) Charlotte). As I welcomed the interns on behalf of the CLT Alliance Board and the many tenants of Vantage that are Alliance members, I shared the following three points that I have heard from my mentors over the years. I thought I’d share today here as we all have interns and new associates joining in the coming weeks. #1 – Deliver in role. You were hired for a reason and you have a certain amount of time with the organization to leave an impact. Meet and exceed expectations. You have the chance to define yourself. You don’t want anyone to say about you at the end of the summer “They were fine”. No matter what the task, think about how to over deliver. Try to get better every week. “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” -- Maya Angelou #2 – Build your network. Take the opportunity to learn from executives, business owners, community leaders. Don’t focus on someone’s level as you build connections -- friends around you today will be executives of tomorrow. Look left and right, in 15 years these will be the executives leading companies in the region. They will be fellow not-for-profit board members and own businesses. Some will be peers and some may work for you or you may work for them. “Make friends before you need them.” #3 - Be positive. Work doesn’t feel like work when you show up connected to your purpose and with an inherently positive outlook. As you accelerate your career, understand our rapidly growing and changing community. Help. Lead. Engage in causes you care about. Show up.
