Last Sunday I had the privilege of seeing Jordan Peterson at the SSE in Belfast!❤ One part of the lecture really stood out to me and I thought it was fantastic advice for anyone feeling stuck in their career. This is what you do if you aren't happy in your job: 1. Make a list of all the things you like about your job and all the things you dislike 📝→The key is to be specific. Now you have a list, you are better aligned to understanding what you do and don't want. 2. Get your CV in order 📃→You must be prepared. 3. Draw out what your dream life would be like in 5 years, think big. What is the best-case scenario. 🎨 4. Draw out what your life would look like in 5 years if nothing changed. If everything stayed the same and you didn't change. The thing about changing nothing is that you become weaker, you are older, less resilient and unmotivated. It is a very dangerous thing because it's harder to change the further you go. The idea of visualising the worst-case scenario is to repeal you. 5. Now you have 2 visualisations, 1 to motivate you and 1 to repeal you→This is the key to initiating action. 🔑 6. Finally you need a plan. You need actionable steps to make sure you reach your goal. 🎯 Remember the importance of details and keeping yourself accountable. I thought this was great advice and really resonated with me working in a recruitment company. I hope this helps someone and why I wanted to share. We came across Scott Galloway's 'unsolicited career advice' recently. We have shared a link below. We have a couple of immediate reactions to his advice. The first is... well... it is remarkable how well, and pithily, he sums up what a lot of people think they have to do to be 'successful.' It's the Gordon Gekko...scorched earth... approach toward careers. The second is that, like most of the career advice out there today, it focuses on how individuals should shape or mold themselves to maximize their employment or professional returns. Scott delivers this in a powerful way, perhaps delighting a little in throwing some rocks at the cliches of following dreams and passions. Our own views here are that Scott's advice is both accurate but also potentially dangerous. There are hidden costs and risks of pursuing a purely self-maximizing approach toward careers. Equally, and perhaps even more importantly, we are doubtful that the suggested prize is worth the sacrifices for most people.
