I'm excited to present two research papers at ASME TURBO EXPO 2024 (ASME International Gas Turbine Institute) in London. Is anyone else attending? 😊 My second paper titled: 'GT2024-126107: DESIGN STRATEGY OF THRUST GAS BEARINGS FOR REFRIGERANT COMPRESSORS CONSIDERING EFFECTS OF CENTRIFUGAL FORCE AND CONVECTIVE INERTIA' presents design strategy by consideration of 3D thermo-hydrodynamic (THD) performance of rigid thrust gas bearings lubricated with a refrigerant gas using Reynolds Equation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The gas bearing is operated in both hydrodynamic and hybrid modes at high ambient pressures typical to the bearing compartment of refrigerant compressors. The CFD simulations adopted an advanced turbulence model and Peng-Robinson real gas equation of state while the Reynolds Equation-based THD model adopted NIST Refprop for real gas model. The new year couldn’t start in a better way! I’m glad to announce that my paper “Convective heat transfer correlations for TPMS based heat exchanger” has been officially published in the journal Applied Thermal Engineering. In the world of innovative heat exchangers, we often see that the use of additively manufactured TPMS structures leads to an impressive increase in thermal performances. Yet, engineers are often faced with the challenge of relying on computationally expensive CFD simulations or long and time consuming experimental tests for the design of such heat exchangers. As the article’s title suggests, it is presented a single correlation for a quick and accurate estimation of the convective heat transfer coefficient for different TPMS structures. The correlation is based on the results of CFD simulations and its validity is explored for a range of Reynolds numbers, for different fluids and for different geometries. This phase change thermal interface material (TIM) engineering, offers superior thermal performance. With thin bond lines and low thermal impedance at very low pressure (< 10 psi) and at higher pressure (> 35 psi), the formulation delivers excellent thermal capability, while minimizing stress. BERGQUIST® HI FLOW THF 5000UT is solid at room temperature but flows and fills the interface once it reaches its target temperature (45°C). Thermal conductivity as high as 8.5 W/m-K has been achieved, the material has good pump out resistance, and has demonstrated excellent reliability up to 150°C. In our recent paper published in Case Studies in Thermal Engineering (IF=6.8), we experimentally investigated the exergy and thermal efficiency of heat exchangers fitted by novel Flapped V-baffle vortex generators. However, this development is contrasted by growing global competition and cost pressure. The measurement concept of a soft flow rate sensor presented here, addresses this discrepancy by means of a cost-effective software-based sensor, utilizing the dependence between flow rate and flow force in hydraulic spool valves. In the presented work, the feasibility of the introduced approach and the anticipated challenges, such as the modeling of disturbances in the mechanical, fluidic and electromagnetic subdomain, are assessed. For this purpose, important phenomena influencing measurement accuracy are identified on the basis of previous work. With the help of these findings, a greatly simplified version of the soft sensor is built and evaluated with a commercial valve to perform an initial test of the concept. Regardless of future implementations, the soft sensor concept presented here may have limitations in terms of dynamics and accuracy. However, the aim is not to replace a classic flow rate sensor, such as a gear sensor, but rather to create a cost-effective way to determine the flow rate without any additional integration effort.
