How is the MSL recruitment market in 2024? Here are my 2 cents! If you're planning to switch MSL roles this year, keep these important points in mind: A. Due to 2023 layoffs, there is an abundance of MSL candidates on the market. Therefore, having experience in the therapeutic area is a must. However, experience in the specific indication is the real differentiator. This can come from your time in academia or a previous role in industry. B. Salaries for MSL positions have stagnated in the last 2 years due to many qualified applicants being willing to take a pay cut to secure a job. If you're aiming for a substantial salary increase, you'll need to qualify for a higher title, which generally means having 3+ years of experience for a Senior MSL title. C. On a positive note, there are already more opportunities available in the MSL market in 2024 compared to Q1 of 2023. My desk is much busier than it was this time last year, so gear up for a variety of opportunities coming your way in the next 12 months. D. If you plan to make a move in Q2 after the bonus season, start applying at least 3 months in advance. Applying, interviewing and negotiating always takes longer than expected. E. Networking is key! I recently spoke to a candidate who set his sights on an MSL role while completing his PhD.
