Jumbo shrimp. HA! Icebergs. What could go wrong? Reality TV. Now that’s funnier than “jumbo shrimp.” But what happens when you don’t see the twist — What happens when you only see the surface and don’t know the mechanism that makes the machine work? 70% of American’s still trust local news broadcasts. And the local news is trusted by people across the political spectrum. Great! What’s lurking beneath the surface? (I didn’t mention ice bergs for nothing.) Sinclair Broadcast Group owns nearly 200 local news stations in about 90 markets. Sinclair Broadcast Group sends scripts to each station that the anchors are mandated to read. On any day, if you could tune in to every Sinclair station, you’d see the exact same story word for word. Local journalists — Producers, reporters, anchors — Must air mandated stories. They can't act independently. Not on the story selection, point of view, fact checks or presentation. It’s #MediaRecMonday and the recommendation for today is to know the ownership of your local news channel. The independence of the press matters. Even if you agree with the point of view — Even if you tune in and everything seems, “normal” — Take a moment to search the ownership of your local channel. Because you deserve to know. Because independence matters. Because facts matter. #Leadership #Localnews #Journalismmatters

💥Ka- Boom 💥 Erin O'Mara are you a day early with this Truth-Bomb? Regardless- this is a whopper. It stopped me in my tracks and sounds a heckuva a lot like the “free” (sarcastic air quotes) press in places like Russia and China. Independent journalism is required for the proper functioning our our democracy. Period. This is alarming to me. Erin O'Mara any suggestions beyond understanding who owns the news channel?

I didn't know this and it sends chills down my spine Erin. I've almost given up on getting anything worthwhile and factual from the "news."

John Oliver did an entire “Last Week Tonight” episode on this very topic years ago, Erin O'Mara. I was shocked at the control the parent company exerted over the stations! Thanks for reminder! Suggestions on TV news that’s independent and objective? I find they all have an agenda to push these days…

Erin O'Mara yup. Thank you for calling this out. Especially now living in Europe 🇪🇺, the stories are told differently and a see facts being spun or hidden in the US.

It’s surprising how much control a single company can have over local news broadcasts. Knowing who owns your local news station is crucial for understanding the potential biases and ensuring you’re getting independent journalism. I always believed local news was a reliable source, but this definitely gives me pause. It's a good reminder to stay curious and informed about where our news is coming from. Thanks for shedding light on this!

Erin O'Mara, I actually did notice that when I was traveling recently. It seemed eerily familiar, but I brushed it off. Now that I know what you shared, it seems more creepy than eerie. Wow. Keep pulling back the curtain for us!

Sinclair has been steadily expanding their reach for a long time and the agenda is pretty well documented - ditch local news (and politics) in favor of national stories and position politically to the right of any competing local news in that market. It's not about news at all with them.
