It wasn’t the white noise in the background. It required something from the viewer. It demanded your focus. Your sole attention. These shows helped spur the success of streaming and accelerate the era of bingeing-where you could lose yourself in a few hours of complex storytelling with well-developed characters. We continue to dissect the impact of social media, particularly Insta and TikTok, on our lives and industries. How does this impact our attention spans, our desires for the long series, the more complex storytelling? A major warning sign from David Chase in The Guardian piece here fits with what I’ve been seeing anecdotally. With the BBC revealing it reached a peak audience of 6.9 million for the series finale of 'The Traitors' Season 2 on Friday (more than double the audience for its Season 1 finale), and shows such as 'Love Island All Stars', 'Gladiators' and 'Mr Bates vs The Post Office' garnering impressive ratings on their debuts, many in the TV industry are abuzz at the idea of Linear TV making a comeback. There's no denying that our current terrestrial landscape holds incredible sway with Event TV: those series playing out in real time, where spoilers are a very real threat if you're not absolutely-minute-by-minute-put-the-kids-to-bed-early/sorry-I-cant-go-on-our-hinge-date-tonight UP TO DATE. Think that annoying boy in your form telling you that Sirius Black died on Monday morning at school after 'Order of the Phoenix' was released on a Saturday (thanks for nothing Martyn you little shit, I was only on Chapter 22) or the level of ostracisation you felt from the general public if you missed the Craig/Nasty Nick show down of all show downs peak Series 1 Big Brother. No one wants to feel left out. And no one wants plots to be ruined (step in the Data Scientists on how jeopardy and enjoyment are neurologically linked. It's almost like, someone should make a TV format about it or something...) What is behind this latest development? Is it a fluke? Just a sudden wave of good TV? Post Christmas-lethargy? Dry-January? Too much choice so 'let's let the schedule make the decisions today for God's sake, we've already watched the entire series of The US Office 6 times it's time for a change'? There's certainly something to be said about the bullet-proof nature of immediacy: Sports broadcasting, News Programmes and Competition formats are here to stay and no denying. But how are TV decision makers utilising time-dependancy to increase viewership? Once relying on the binge-worthy nature of entire series dumps, there's been a steady increase of new releases being stripped across a period of time from a wide range of broadcasters and streamers, suggesting that comissioners are aware of the how 'conversation' and synchronicity are intrinsically linked to audience appeal. Is it all about connection? Do we need to feel a sense of community to really enjoy a series? How will this impact how TV is programmed in the future and does it limit the type of shows that will be commissioned? Glutton for a gradually teased show, or big on the binge watch? LMMs & Google's Gemini 1.5 Pro Watching Television News: The Instability Of Summarizing Video Yesterday we explored Google's Gemini 1.5 Pro model's video analysis capabilities by asking it to analyze a 6-minute clip of Russian television news and describe what it saw through a series of prompts that tested its performance across a range of analytic dimensions. One prominent observation from those experiments was the high degree of instability in Gemini's responses: LMM's, like LLM's, produce very different results across each run. Let's explore this in more detail by asking Gemini to "describe this video in detail" six times – each time in a brand-new session from scratch – and compare the results. The end result is that of the six runs, the first four runs contain just a handful of stories and exclude the majority of stories in the clip. One of those four contained almost no stories from the clip. The fifth run is the only one that contains a reasonable summary of the full mix of stories in the clip, but the sixth run returns to the basic limited summary. Thus, of six times Gemini was asked to "describe this video in detail" in six separate brand-new from-scratch sessions, in five of them it listed just the same few stories from the clip and of those five, one time it listed almost none of the stories and only once in the six runs did it provide a reasonable mix of the full set of stories in the clip. Thus, from a consistency and stability standpoint, it took six runs of Gemini to get a single reasonable-quality response. Yet, even that response was far lower quality than yesterday's responses. It is unclear whether this results from continual model tuning and updates that caused an actual model change from yesterday to today or whether simply we lucked out in yesterday's runs. Either way, it suggests that it may require multiple runs over a video clip to get a comprehensive result, though it is unclear what metric might be used to determine which run is the most accurate. https://lnkd.in/e7wj44f5
