Remember the Overton Window? In Trump's administration there was some chatter about this political science concept, which effectively notes the effect of how extreme left or extreme right shifts move the public's concept of what the middle or moderate position is. Sometimes, it's clearer when a politician is testing where the window is. American policy usually supports parents' rights. Many of the seeds of anti-trans bills are even called parents' rights bills and are the canary in the coal mine -- "I as a parent (with no qualification to decide on what is effective education) should be able to dictate what can and can't be in your school's curriculum." What's most disheartening about this, but wholly unsurprising, is that the statements (and really the whole debate) miss a critical point of gender dysphoria and really the experience of any social oppression. These policies get at micro-tactics that have been fanned up to try to kindle public reaction; barring policy efforts at banning gender affirming surgeries for young people, this would likely only be on the radar of individually affected families. They are stirring false gossip into policy. It's a 21st century whisper campaign, and in the 21st century everyone has a megaphone. The double standard of the notion of parents' rights should be enough cause for suspicion of the motives of any of these kinds of policies. These debates are chiefly about the ability to use policy to mold what kinds of people and conditions the state is allowed to control. School choice, abortion, and trans rights are all in the same pool of motive, and they are all issues of economic mobility, opportunity, and what the future of American leaders in all domains can look like. #diversity #futureofAmerica #parentsrights #schoolchoice #translivesmatter #thrivingfutures

so often people of the unmoving center hide behind "well we better do a study" (or form a committee, eh church friends?). But here's the thing: Trans rights? They've been done. UBI? Been done. Housing first? Done. Higher wages? Done. Taxing the most wealthy? Done. HEPA filters and masks? Done. Reducing emissions? Done. Taking care of people in general? Done. The data are on our side, and the surveys are LITERALLY in. In the binder. Right there. It's long past time to use the data we have to: - reduce the wealth gap - get people housing - get people food - get people health care - get people rights - reduce the suicide rate - improve the state of the climate - keep people from getting sicker from Certain Pandemics We Could Name - make the world a better place. If you're not willing to change because it's scary, then you're going to just have to say that, because the studies have. been. done.

tl;dr: Yes I would be affected. (I wanted 2024 to be better. We have more harmful legislation being introduced than in 2023 at this time… which was more than 2022 at this time… etc.)

A new landmark systematic review of transgender surgeries finds that regret rates are "remarkably low." It is uncommon to feel regret about gender-affirming surgery - that is the evidence in the review publication that Erin Reed covers below. The review doesn't just provide evidence, however. It shifts the narrative by showing that many other major life events are followed by higher rates of regret than gender-affirming surgery. Situating regret within this broad empirical frame is empowering. The new empirically driven narrative is powerful: regret is a part of the human experience. Fewer than 1% of people report feeling regret following gender affirming surgery. Higher rates of regret are experienced after nearly every other form of plastic surgery and after many other major non-surgical life decisions. Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). 🩵🩷🤍 The Transgender community is over 4 times more likely than cisgender people to experience violent victimizations in their lifetime. Even more so, the Trans community is at higher risk for that violence to happen more than once in their lifetime. These rates increase for Trans people of the Global Majority (people of color). These numbers are based on only those violent acts that were reported and identified as Trans or Non-binary victims. There is no discrimination of age either; these violent attacks are against any Transgender individual from childhood through older adulthood. 🩵🩷🤍 People with hate-filled platforms in this country have given permission for anti-Trans violence to be blatantly accepted. They have celebrated steps toward eradicating the Trans community. This creates a world where Trans folx have no safe space to be themselves. Fear of attack and constant removal of human rights make it impossible to live. 🩵🩷🤍 The Trans community has numerous intersections. Those with Transgender identities include all ages, races, faiths, religions, disabilities, and ethnicities. We cannot advocate for Trans rights without advocating for all Trans humans. 🩵🩷🤍 Thank you to the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia for creating this very visible and interactive space. For organizations and companies alike, building up your internal and external policies to protect Trans Folk is evermost important right now. It’s important to look at what your actual day-to-day environment looks like, as well as what you are doing as an organization/company to create a safe environment even amongst the attacks legislatively. Some things to look at are: - What does my health plans for my employees look like? Does it cover gender affirming care for my employees and their families? - What do the laws in my state look like? What can we do as a workplace to protect our employees? - Can my workplace become remote for an employee who needs to escape to another safer state? - If I’m sending employees to these states, how are they protected? These are just a few questions we as leaders must ask ourselves, and make sure those in our orbit are asking themselves as well.
