We are excited to share that we have officially launched the GE HealthCare Foundation today, a focused and ambitious initiative that builds from the company’s legacy in delivering access to healthcare to make a difference in the lives of patients in underserved communities.   The GE HealthCare Foundation is a charitable organization, incorporated separately from GE HealthCare, with a mission to advance equitable access to precision healthcare. The GE HealthCare Foundation will fund the Colleague Matching Gifts program (US only in 2024), humanitarian aid for crises and disasters globally, and health-equity-focused grants to organizations that aim to make healthcare more accessible, personal, human and flexible. As a leader in our industry, it is critical that we play an active role in inspiring and pursuing meaningful change globally, and supporting and elevating access to healthcare in the communities that need it most.   Following the example of GE including more than a century of making an impact on communities, education and diversity, our company is making philanthropy and social impact top priorities right from the start. The GE HealthCare Foundation’s work will initially focus on maternal health, and at launch, it will be making its first grants to dynamic global nonprofits committed to improving care for women and babies. December 1st is National Women Helping Women Day. What a great day to kick off our #90DaysofCaine Period Packs for Women’s Shelters. I know all of us can join together for this great cause. Starting now through the 8th of December we will be collecting supplies for making “Period Packs”. I ask that you donate either feminine hygiene products at the front office area or via Venmo. The cost of hygiene products over a lifetime can be upwards of $10,000 and for 36% of women the cost causes a distruption in life (Missing work) and 1 in 5 girls miss school because of the lack of access to these hygiene products. This doesn’t even include the cost of care, medication, birth control, complications like Endometriosis (Which is very near and dear to my heart. Evidence shows that babies are more likely to receive human milk and its benefits when their parents receive support from lactation professionals. We also know there is unequal access for those looking to become lactation professionals and the training necessary to support marginalized communities. There is a clear underrepresentation of Black, Indigenous, people of color, and LGBTQIA2S+ in the lactation profession which in turn limits families from those communities to access diverse support. “The number of American babies who died before their first birthdays rose last year, significantly increasing the nation’s infant mortality rate for the first time in two decades, according to provisional figures released Wednesday by the National Center for Health Statistics. The spike is a somber manifestation of the state of maternal and child health in the United States. Infant and maternal mortality, inextricably linked, are widely considered to be markers of a society’s overall health, and America’s rates are higher than those in other industrialized countries. The rates are particularly poor among Black and Native American mothers, who are roughly three times as likely to die during and after pregnancy, compared with white and Hispanic mothers. Their infants face up to double the risk of dying, compared with white and Hispanic babies” And Georgia was one of four states to have statistically significant increases in infant mortalities. It is beyond CRUCIAL that we start to trend these numbers ⬇️ in the right direction.

This mission is accomplished by: (1) increasing diverse representation of lactation consultants and clinicians in the lactation field, (2) meeting the need of the community through low-barrier direct care and (3) expanding access to lactation support around San Diego County by reducing or eliminating chest/breastfeeding deserts. One year ago today CNN reported that the United States received a D+ on the March of Dimes report card, last week the numbers were reported as still increasing. Colorado is a bit lower than the national average receiving a C rating and only a 10% prematurity rate. That means 1 in 10 babies is born prematurely. This is why organizations like ours are vital to the perinatal and neonatal communities.
