Leading by example to protect what is vulnerable. In a landmark collaboration, four First Nations—the Sayisi Dene, Northlands Denesuline, Barren Lands, and O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nations—have joined forces with the governments of Canada and Manitoba to safeguard one of the globe’s most significant ecological treasures. This initiative aims to transform the 50,000 sq km Seal River watershed (the size of Denmark) into an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA), showcasing an extraordinary commitment to preserving biodiversity and promoting Indigenous wisdom and leadership in conservation efforts. The Seal River watershed, a pristine expanse of natural beauty teeming with wildlife and untouched by industrial development, represents what is most vulnerable on our planet. Through this agreement, the partners are not only working towards conserving a crucial habitat for numerous species at risk but also setting a global example of how to protect our most vulnerable ecosystems through collaboration and respect for Indigenous knowledge and rights. The initiative stands as a call to action for all of us to support Indigenous-led conservation efforts that honor and preserve both our natural and cultural heritages. The process of returning land, resources, and cultural heritage to Indigenous communities brings numerous benefits, including supporting the conservation of lands for climate resilience and biodiversity. We’re working with the Penobscot Nation to return about 30,000 acres located within the heart of the Nation’s ancestral hunting and fishing territories, known as Wáhsehtəkʷ. And the winners of the 2024 Natura 2000 Awards are: Awarded from citizens:  the Polish initiative to protect the black stork,  the Belgian Wolf Fencing Team for promoting peaceful coexistence with wolves, the Spanish 'Nature’s guardians for enhancing effectiveness and efficiency of response to environmental crime’. Awarded from the jury: the Estonian Fund for Nature for restoring 8,000 hectare of mire habitats, the Portuguese NGO Ocean Alive for restoring and protecting ‘blue forests’ (seagrass meadows), the Wild Atlantic Nature project for their ’Ground-breaking agri-environment payment scheme for farmers in Natura 2000 areas in Ireland’, the Spanish-French initiative ‘Grazing to preserve Natura 2000 habitats and species in the Pyrenees’ led by the HAZI Foundation. 65% of Europeans live within 5 km of a Natura 2000 site. Natura 2000, is made up of nearly 27,000 protected sites and covers more than 18% of EU land territory and about 9% of its marine areas. Before the year comes to an end, here’s a look-back on some highlights of our fruitful partnership with Conservation International Asia-Pacific, where we joined hands across the region to protect our precious biodiversity with a vision where both people and nature can thrive. We are grateful and heartened to be able to lend support towards 11 programmes across 8 countries in the Asia Pacific that drove multi-pronged efforts in #forestrestoration, #mangrove research, #oceanconservation, #wildlifeprotection and research, including mitigating wildlife-human conflict and even combating illegal wildlife trade. While some of these efforts were hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years, they still achieved meaningful outcomes, which was the result of the inspiring resilience and adaptability of the community and people working on the ground.   Here’s a heartfelt thanks to our partners and colleagues from all our business units for supporting and being with us on this journey. As our CEO Clemens Philippi says in the video, we believe that protecting biodiversity is the insurance for a #sustainablefuture. Today, on World Environment Day, we’re definitely part of #GenerationRestoration. Queensland’s expanding network of protected areas – whether national parks, conservation reserves, special wildlife reserves, Indigenous Protected Areas or other private protected areas – smooths the process of restoring wild landscapes and providing biodiversity and ecosystem benefits. Australia is committed to transforming an interconnected mosaic of landscapes that will cover 30% of the landmass by 2030, and NPAQ’s decades long push to increase Queensland’s safe havens is gaining effect with the recent announcement of a second special wildlife reserve in Queensland. “Protecting and regenerating habitat isn’t just good for the land – studies show that it’s good for us and for economies, too. Today, May 24, marks a historic milestone as we celebrate the first-ever "International Day of the Markhor." This day, proclaimed by the United Nations, highlights the importance of conserving this magnificent species and its habitat. As a Pakistani, I am proud to mark this special day, recognizing our national animal's significance and the efforts to conserve it. The Markhor is an iconic symbol of our country's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. Pakistan's proactive conservation programs and community engagement have led to a steady increase in the Markhor population over the past decade, reaching between 3,500 and 5,000 individuals. This is a testament to our nation's commitment to protecting our natural resources. However, the Markhor faces significant threats, including habitat loss, illegal hunting, poaching, and climate change, which affect its population worldwide. The Markhor is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, highlighting the need for continued conservation efforts. This international day aims to promote global conservation efforts and highlight the importance of international cooperation in protecting the Markhor. It ties into Pakistan's "Living Indus" environmental initiative, recently designated as a "World Restoration Flagship" project by the UN. On this International Day of the Markhor, let's come together to raise awareness and promote continued conservation efforts. As Pakistanis, we have a special responsibility to protect our national animal and its habitat. Our country is home to over 80% of the global Markhor population, making our conservation efforts crucial for the species' survival. Let's share our thoughts and ideas on how we can work together to safeguard the Markhor and its ecosystem.
