To 🐝 or not to be? That is the question on this #WorldBeeDay Pollinators play a critical role in both our economy and ecosystems, contributing to biodiversity, food security, and economic stability. 🚜Agricultural Productivity: Pollinators are essential for the reproduction of many crops. About 75% of global food crops depend on animal pollination. 💶Economic Value: The economic contribution of pollinators to global agriculture is measured in the tens of billions of euros annually. 👫Job Creation: Pollination supports job in agriculture and beyond - benefiting not least rural areas - and underpins economic stability and growth. 🐸Biodiversity: Pollinators contribute to the reproduction of over 85% of the world's flowering plants. This diversity supports resilient ecosystems, providing habitat and food for other wildlife, maintaining genetic diversity, and ensuring healthy ecosystems. 🌿Ecosystem Services: Pollinators are crucial for ecosystem services such as soil formation, nutrient cycling, and water purification. They help maintain plant communities that provide these services, which are essential for environmental health and human well-being. 🌱Plant Reproduction and Food Webs: Pollinators enable the production of seeds and fruits that many animals rely on for food. This interdependence supports entire food webs and ecological balance. Despite their importance, pollinators are facing numerous threats, including habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, diseases, and invasive species. The decline in pollinator populations can lead to decreased crop yields, higher food prices, and loss of biodiversity, making conservation efforts critical for sustainable development. The 🇪🇺 #EUpollinators Initiative aims to halt the decline of pollinators and ensure their long-term recovery by 2030. Through coordinated efforts and the integration of pollinator-friendly practices across sectors, the initiative seeks to maintain healthy ecosystems, secure food production, and protect biodiversity. https://lnkd.in/efWAEZqr

Resonance Technical Associate, Natural Resource Management Katherine Labombarde offers important insights about the ways in which a human-centered approach to conservation, as evidenced in our recently completed USAID Fish Right project in the #Philippines, can improve safety nets and livelihoods as a socio-economic complement to a program's governance and ecological interventions. CONSERVATION GRAZING - WHERE SHOULD THE PROCEEDS BE SPLIT? The income derived from an area of land which could be utilised through conservation grazing is becoming more and more of a hot topic. When the only perceived economic return of the land is from environmental stewardship grants as the return from the actual grazing enterprise is at best a breakeven, who should benefit from the DEFRA support payments? https://lnkd.in/exP2NVRN #rpa ##defra #NE #NT #forestryengland

The Department of Agriculture has recently expressed reservations about the planting of conifers. While we wholeheartedly support the promotion of diverse and healthy plant ecosystems in Ireland and deeply value the heritage and beauty of our native flora, we urge the government to base its decisions on evidence and facts before implementing restrictive policies on tree species. Based on estimates, if Ireland were to rely solely on traditional native woodland for carbon sequestration, it would require over 18.75 million hectares — equivalent to 2.72 times the size of Ireland — to achieve carbon neutrality. In contrast, using only Sitka Spruce for this purpose would necessitate just 4 million hectares.* A solution that integrates both approaches is needed, with a priority placed on forests that will help us reach our EU carbon target. #SEEFA #SaveIrishForestry
