Anglicare Australia's 2024 rental affordability snapshot reflects a harsh reality that renters – and those who work in homelessness and housing solutions – know all too well. Rental affordability is at an all-time low. Each data point from this important report is as stark as the next. The snapshot shows that in metro Melbourne, no properties were affordable for a single person on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, or the Disability Support Pension. There are very few rentals that are affordable for families on minimum wage. Single parents are being priced out of the rental market. The median weekly rent in Melbourne is now six hundred dollars. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that in recent years we have seen a steady increase in people seeking rent assistance, or that the number of employed people who come to us for support paying their rent has almost doubled. When people can't pay their rent, they are at risk of experiencing homelessness. The answer to homelessness is more homes, and more support. Read the full report 👇
