🙌 Unsolicited Life Tips for the men in my industry Coming out of Supply Side West (SupplySide Network) I, like many of you have been busy organizing follow up, downloading with colleagues, and trying samples of various forms and flavors. 💚 💚 For me, it was a great show, and mostly a reminder of what I love about the natural products industry. But also... I have had to observe, listen to, and reflect on the ongoing challenges women face in these trade show environments which can be true showcases for the best of what companies have to offer and the worst of human behavior 😑 Thus, in no particular order, some things to ponder when it comes to navigating the intersection of professional and social behavior. 1) Remember that your colleagues are your colleagues regardless of gender, age, station etc. Treat them as such. 2) Do unto others as they want to be done unto. If that's not how you learned it, go sit with this for a bit. If you don't know how people want to be treated: be observant, be conservative, ask. 3) Hands off. For goodness sake at least ask people before touching them. Alcohol is not an excuse. Neither is Las Vegas in general. 4) If you see a person who might be pregnant, see #3 👆. Also tread carefully with your words. Don't ever assume a woman is pregnant, please. 5) Remember that no matter how big this community seems, it's small. The person you are interacting with might one day be a valued customer, a co-worker, or your boss. They might be friends with your CEO or key account or board director. 6) When in doubt, don't. 7) Feel free to apologize if you reflect on your behavior and realize that it may not have been well received. A good, heartfelt apology doesn't undo the thing, but can be very meaningful. Now I know that some of you have your gender interaction skills finely tuned, and I also know from experience that women are not exempt from bad behavior. We are all human after all. Happy Saturday. ☮ 💟 #lifeadvice #genderequality #goldenrule #unsolicitedadvice

Abby Riggs, a distinguished member of our team at Marco Experiences, recently shared her profound insights on the essence of community, both in our organization and beyond. To me community means being seen. We live in a current society where job openings have 300 applicants in the first hour, meetings often dive into agendas without asking "How are you?" and you can work alongside someone for a year and not know they have kids. These days, it's more common than not to feel "unseen" at your job. For me, community feels the most vibrant and authentic when we get to know each other as humans first and foremost - taking the time to understand what makes each of us who we are, inside and outside of the workplace. I have found that I can tell how strong a group's sense of community is through observation. Do they take the time to check in on what's going on in each other's lives, remembering recent details - "How was hosting your parents this past weekend?" or "Your birthday is coming up! Any big plans?". All of our lives are so intricate with so many moving pieces, it's so special when people take the time to slow down and want to understand where you're at. With Marco, I could tell from the get go there was a tangible, real sense of community. Despite being fully remote with the team spread through multiple time zones, in every call I had my first week I could tell the team knew each other at an intentional level. This was also extremely evident to me with the time each person took to get to know me, past my first week and throughout my time here, no matter their status within the company. Feeling seen so early on into a position is rare, and made me ecstatic to join the Marco community.

Last month, The Career Pathways team visited our partners at Apna Ghar, Inc. (Our Home), a gender violence organization. WE’s Senior Career Pathways Manager, Tara D. Driver, M.A., LPC, PEL & Programs and Research Coordinator, Efrata Sasahulih, M.A. observed their class session & answered participants’ questions. Career Foundations is Women Employed’s career exploration course designed to help develop a career pathway plan leading to sustainable careers . WE also created a version of Career Foundations to address the challenges & barriers that crisis populations face when trying to navigate workforce services, based on our Intersecting Barriers: Challenges to Economic Empowerment for Domestic Violence Survivors report. Released in 2022, the report sought to better understand the barriers to economic independence by gathering the insights of survivors, domestic violence advocates & workforce development professionals representing 23 Chicagoland organizations.
