Democracies should innovate more. Citizens are exploring alternatives to liberal democracy because they feel the current systems do not represent them. By opting for protest votes and sweeping "this-will-solve-all-your-pains" proposals, citizens try to regain what democracy is not offering them - agency over their future. You might think it's a problem of ideas, but think again. There are plenty of new decisionmaking mechanisms, innovative ways of participation and ideas to build additional democratic institutions. The problem is that they are scattered and don't always reach the right people. Ultimately, democracy does not change because policymakers and elected representatives tend to avoid more checks and balances or increased accountability. It will take much convincing.
