One of the key priorities of the #ICPA is the collection, preservation and analysis of evidence. At Eurojust, we see the number of files submitted to the Core International Crimes Evidence Database (#CICED) growing: 📂 2 000+ files 🌍 14 countries To prove the scale and systemic nature of Russia’s crimes in Ukraine, it is crucial that prosecution strategies rely on large sets of evidence. #Ukraine / #Palestine – International Criminal Court When the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (#ICC), Karim Khan, makes a clear connection between arrest warrants for war crimes and crimes against humanity in #Ukraine and the situation in #Gaza. Is this a warning to Israel? Justice Info: In the prosecutor's press statement following the arrest warrants, there is the idea that making these arrest warrants public for these particular types of crimes – the illegal destruction of civilian objects - should reverberate amongst anyone who is committing or thinking about committing these kinds of crimes. This was a message meant to go far beyond Ukraine, to the Israel-Palestine conflict in particular, wasn't it? Sergey Vasiliev: I believe so, because very deliberately, the prosecutor underlined that this is a notice to state actors and non-state actors, in Ukraine and outside Ukraine. It is indeed a warning not only to the warring parties in Ukraine. It is also directed at the parties to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, in particular Israeli Defence Forces and Hamas fighters. Ukraine's POW Coordination Headquarters restores services after cyberattack Ukraine's 🇺🇦 Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said on Jan. 29 that it had restored all services following yesterday's DDoS attack 🤨 📍 The attack 💥 came amid an escalating cyberwar between Russia 🇷🇺 and Ukraine, with numerous large-scale cyberattacks reported by both sides. "After a proper check by IT specialists, all services of the Coordination Headquarters, which were subjected to a DDoS attack yesterday, are working normally and are available online," the headquarters said on its Telegram 💬 channel. The department responsible for monitoring the treatment of prisoners of war (POW) was hacked mere days after the crash of the Russian Il-76 plane in Russia's Belgorod Oblast on Jan. 24, which Moscow claims resulted in the death of 65 Ukrainian POWs 📍 Russia also alleges that Ukrainian forces shot down the plane ✈️. Ukraine has not confirmed these claims and called for an international investigation, which Russia refuses. Ukrainian officials pointed out the lack of concrete evidence confirming the presence of a large number of Ukrainian POWs at the crash site. The Coordination Headquarters 🪖 for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed that Moscow was meant to return 65 POWs during a planned exchange on Jan. 24. When will there be a "fourth pillar" of the EU devoted to defence after the European Communities, the common foreign and security policy (CFSP) and police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters, as well as a European Commissioner for Defence?
