🌍 #WorldEnvironmentDay celebrates our shared environment and provides a chance to raise awareness about protecting it. EMA’s Deputy Director Ivo Claassen shared some thoughts with us on this day about the strong connection between environmental, animal and human health. 💪 EMA’s commitment “Climate change and other challenges like deforestation or pollution drive many of the threats we are facing today, with detrimental consequences for our health, as well as that of our animals and our environment. Some environmental challenges can lead to a rise of existing diseases and the spread of new ones in areas they were previously not present. Outbreaks of Ebola, Monkeypox, the rise in cases of vector-borne diseases transmitted through mosquitos such as Dengue, Zika or Chikungunya (for which the first vaccine was recommended for approval by EMA in May) show how connected health and environment are. This will lead unavoidably to a surge in the demand for new medicines and vaccines. As part of a strong European Health Union, EMA is committed to:  ➡ supporting global efforts to respond to current and new health threats; ➡ contributing to addressing these threats by safeguarding the availability of medicines and; ➡ providing science-based recommendations on medicine safety, quality and efficacy.” 💊 Medicines and the environment “While medicines are essential to protect the health of people and animals, we shouldn’t forget about their environmental impact. Currently, all veterinary medicines must undergo an environmental risk assessment before they can be authorised. EMA also provides guidance to applicants to help them evaluate the environmental impact of their products, implement risk mitigation measures, and ensure appropriate labelling is in place for users and healthcare professionals. In the future, the revision of the pharmaceutical legislation for human medicines will contain many new provisions aiming at achieving a higher level of environmental protection, and making medicines more environmentally sustainable.” 🤝 Working together: the One Health task force “Balancing human and animal health and their shared environment sustainably is a challenge that demands strong collaboration across human, animal and plant health, food safety, the climate crisis and environmental sustainability. Because of this, in collaboration with other EU health, food and environment agencies EMA has established the One Health task force. As part of this initiative, a cross-agency framework for action was recently published. Together we aim to enhance strategic coordination, research coordination, capacity building, stakeholder engagement and joint inter-agency activities.” We all play a crucial role in driving positive environmental change and promote sustainability while protecting the health of our people, our animals and our planet. 👨👩👧👦 🐄 🌿 For more information on the One Health Task Force: 🔗 https://europa.eu/!BwY3Vt

It's important to have a dedicated #WorldEnvironmentDay to highlight the importance of environmental protection. I appreciate the focus on reducing the impact of medicines on our planet, aligning with #GenerationRestoration. Let's come together for a greener, more sustainable future in line with the UN's mission to protect and restore our environment. 🌿🌍💊
