If you look at the number of patent applications worldwide, you can get a glimpse into the future because many of those ideas in the patents will eventually become businesses and technologies in the future. I ran across this timelapse video of patent applications over time. It's interesting to see how the ranking of countries changes with time. The European Patent Office (EPO) has announced that it will discontinue EPO Form 1201 (Entry into the European Phase) from 1 November. Currently, where the EPO is selected as the designated or elected office, it sends the form during the international phase to inform European representatives, international agents, and applicants of the steps to take to enter the European phase. From 1 November, all relevant information will be stored in a dedicated section on the epo.org website. The EPO comments that this is another step “towards a digital and paperless patent grant process.” It calculates that this move will save 500,000 sheets of paper each year. https://lnkd.in/etSPwHhG.

It's February 29, and being a Thursday, there will be no leap patents this year. The last time a leap patent issued was in 2000, and the next leap patent won't issue until 2028. Read more at https://lnkd.in/e4aRV6xU

Week 52 - Exploring European Patent Ratios 📊. In the last week of 2023, we have counted 2184 B1 publications of granted patents and 2725 mentions of intentions to grant, i.e., communications under R71(3). That completes 2023, which indeed was very similar to 2017 in terms of the activity of the European Patent Office #EPO in intending to grant patents and actually granting patents.

EBoA decision G 1/22 and G 2/22 (issued today) concluded that the EPO is competent to assess priority entitlement and that there is a rebuttable presumption of validity on the applicant’s entitlement if the formal requirements for claiming priority are satisfied, and that such rebuttable presumption applies also for the so-called joint applicants approach.
