NASCAR has unveiled its first electric race car in downtown Chicago, marking a significant step towards embracing electric racing. This initiative is a collaborative effort with major automotive companies like Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, and electric parts manufacturer ABB. The electric NASCAR car, driven by semi-retired NASCAR driver David Ragan, is a high-performance electric vehicle (EV) designed to gauge fan interest in electric racing. Ragan described the experience of driving the EV as unlike anything he had encountered before, noting the absence of the usual noise and heat from gasoline-powered engines and the unique sensory experience of hearing tire squeals and smelling brakes. NASCAR's commitment to sustainability extends beyond electric vehicles. The organization plans to introduce sustainable racing fuel by 2028, implement recycling at all events, use 100% renewable electricity at facilities and tracks, and aim for "net zero" operating emissions by 2035. Formula E, the single-seater motorsport championship for battery-electric cars, is in its tenth season now. And technology developed by the racing teams is already transitioning into street EVs and ecosystem infrastructure. Formula E’s more famous cousin, Formula One, has long been the testbed for engine development, aerodynamics, transmission, software, tyre technology, etc. Innovations honed on the racetrack have found their way into the humble family car. High-performance battery, fast-charging, regen-braking, transmission fluids, and tyres are some of the areas where learnings on the electric-car racetrack are making mainstream impact. One of the biggest track-to-road transitions is in the area of vehicle software, which are fine-tuned and continually updated to extract every possible ounce of performance, range, and efficiency from a race car. No EV is more ‘software defined’ than the ones racing for a podium finish. The third generation of Formula E race cars is known as GEN3, and it comes after the Gen1 (2014–2017) and Gen2 (2018–2022) models. Put simply, the technology improvements in the batteries and powertrains of each generation of Formula E vehicles have allowed them to go faster. Lucid Motors has a secret weapon that few people know about…. It’s the size of an X-Box and has the power of a BMW M3…. Imagine if you could take out the engine and transmission from a BMW M3 and replace it with a 32kg powertrain with the same HP. All this whilst improving torque, reliability and eliminating tailpipe emissions…. Lucid Motors can already do exactly that and it is already being used as the “Regen motor” in Formula-E. Batteries are essential, regardless of the size of the electric driving unit (EDU). In order to ensure efficient energy utilization and regeneration, you will need a motor that is capable of balancing energy consumption. The motor should also be intelligent enough to alternate between peak power, regen, eco mode, and fail-safe characteristics. I don't see this being the case here — except a marketing scheme with very little to no innovation — unfortunately.

On the second day of #AAPEX last year, I was pleasantly startled by the unmistakable roaring of what ended up being the winner of the first ever Las Vegas Grand Prix 🏆🏁 This was the view from where I was standing as Red Bull racing zoomed up and down the strip. Often, going unnoticed by ordinary drivers, the world of motorsports drives innovation that extends far beyond the racetrack, reaching our daily lives. Out of many ways Formula 1 has influenced the technology of every day automobiles, here are a couple of examples: 1️⃣ Regenerative Braking Formula 1 teams continuously look for ways to utilize the full extend of technological advancements to achieve the highest level of efficiency and some of those discoveries make their way to every day use. One standout example is the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). Initially introduced in 2009, KERS captures kinetic energy during braking and converts it into electrical energy, providing a power boost when needed. This innovation has transcended the world of racing, finding its way into hybrid systems of road cars. Next time you drive a hybrid vehicle, consider the role F1 played in advancing energy recovery technology. 2️⃣ Head and Neck Support Safety is paramount in Formula 1, it's not just for when the driver is traveling at 200mph but it's more for when the vehicle taking the sharpest curves with full traction, or when the car comes to an abrupt stop from its top speed. For all those instances, the Head and Neck Support (HANS) device stands as a testament to the commitment to driver well-being. Originating in the 1980s and gaining prominence after tragic incidents, the HANS device significantly reduces the risk of head and neck injuries. A version of this application had a direct influence in the safety features of road cars. From airbags to reinforced structures, these advancements reflect the dedication to safety that echoes the spirit of F1.
