Over 60 years on from the introduction of the contraceptive pill, we still have a considerable way to go to improve methods of contraception. A heightened awareness of the side effects is driving women away from hormonal contraceptives without similarly effective, convenient and non-invasive alternatives. The Canadian government announced on Saturday that it will soon cover the full cost of common contraceptives for women – including intrauterine devices (IUDs), contraceptive pills and hormonal implants – as part of a major health care reform. Canada now joins the United Kingdom, Ireland and France as jurisdictions providing free access to prescription birth control. Contraceptives aren't free anywhere in Australia, and only some states have removed the need for GP prescriptions as part of pharmacist scope of practice reforms. Experts including Danielle Mazza AM FAHMS and sexual health advocates are calling for changes to make contraceptives more universally accessible. Canada has highlighted the financial cost of contraceptives as one of the largest barriers to access. 82% of women take on the cost of contraception alone, regardless of their relationship status. 68% of women believe it’s unfair they have to pay more than men. 47% of Australian men think this is fair. As one of our digital clinics, Kin Fertility is committed to empowering women to take control of their reproductive health through education and access. As part of this mission, Kin commissioned a national survey of 1000 Australian men and women to examine the current climate of contraception. The research revealed the gender disparity between both cost and access, while addressing the steps needed to achieve a solution. "The percentage of girls [in the U.S.] ages 15 to 19 using long-acting reversible contraception, which includes intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants, reached a reported high of 19% from 2015-2019," writes Haley Weiss of a new CDC report, which indicates a tripled rate of use since the 2011-2015 data set. "Overall, teens use more varied methods of contraception than they did when the CDC established its current survey methods in 2002, including emergency contraception, which went from being used by 8% of girls ages 15 to 19 in 2011-2015 to 22% of girls in 2015-2019. A similar increase occurred in the share of teens who reported using more than one contraceptive method, which reflects that teens may be more aware of their choices than they used to be."
