This post struck a cord with me. I've been a fan and user of Journey. As a founder they impressed me with their user centricity from design to service. That said - founding is not for the faint of heart. You pour yourself into creating something from....nothing. And it takes all of your - creativity focus effort strategy attention time and money and Sometimes it starts to slip slide ways. You panic and look around and everyone else seems to be doing great. Lesson 1 is try not to compare yourself to others, folks hide their broken bits what you see in public is not the full story. Lesson 2 is appreciate your people. In my case its my co-founders, team, family and VC. But for this post I want to make a special shout out to the creator-builders at Included Konstantin Komissarchik 🇺🇦, Chandan Golla, Raghu Gollamudi (he/him), Anna Bethke, and previously Michael Chang. Founding is very stressful, ranging from positive stress to negative stress and through it all my co-founders, our data scientists and engineering team continue to focus on solving #customer problems and delivering results. Lesson 3 is to lean on your #strengths, and #respect the strengths of others. I'm a huge fan of strengths based strategies and while I've learned an incredible amount about SaaS startups in the past couple years, I've also reaffirmed my belief that your #team should have a diversity of strengths and each player should be respected and supported in leading from their subject matter expertise. Just a few reflections that come up for me after such a thought provoking post from the Journey team. The power of what you built is a clear signal of your strong future. A concern I see in many founders: They don’t want great board members. Founders work hard to build their company. As a former founder myself, I completely understand. But as companies mature, they need the guidance of people who have walked the same path before. Wyatt Taubman, the founder of our portfolio company Vive Organic is a perfect example of how to build a world-class board. In the early days of Vive, Wyatt attracted two highly experienced independent executives to the board: • Rebecca Messina – former CMO of Uber, McKinsey Consultant, and former Head of Marketing at Coke • Chuck Muth – former Head of Sales at Beyond Meat, and former Sr. Executive at Coke Additionally, Wyatt had two institutional investors on his board, including GroundForce Capital. I’d say for a start-up, Vive’s board was punching well above its weight. The company had a successful exit, and I know Wyatt would give credit to what he learned from his board. Experienced board members can spot opportunities founders miss and save the company from unnecessary pitfalls. Great founders want great board members. Insecure founders want to exert control.
