Having lived in Brazil before, I know more or less what to expect when I'll be moving to Rio in January. But ever since I met Coco Hofs, I know a lot more about cultural perception and I got curious: using the culture map framework from Prof. Erin Meyer, what can I expect as a Dutchie in Brazil from this cultural perspective? Coco explained it all to me in a Zoom session (below is a snippet) and pulled a graph comparing the Dutch and Brazilian culture. See how big the gaps are? 😅 I realised: this is so valuable, every expat should know about the gaps between their own culture and the host culture. There's no right or wrong here, it's just about knowing where potential gaps lie. But it saves a lot of headache and wasted energy! I'm currently spending 10 days workationing in Tarifa, Spain 🏖️ With a friend, I made while working remotely in Capetown 1,5 years ago!!! This week we have: 🗺️ Exploring the charming, medieval streets of a Spanish town. 💭 Exchanging insightful ideas and exploring potential business ventures. 🏄🏽♂️ Engaging in various sports - from kitesurfing to swimming, tennis, and hiking. 🌅 ended our days with picturesque sunsets, barbecues, and enriching conversations. Surprisingly, these few days have proven to be an unexpected catalyst for productivity. The change in perspective has allowed me to consider topics that have been on my mind lately from a different perspective. What I take away from these few days: → Make sure to change work locations every now and then to get new impressions. → Build your base of like-minded people → Let yourself be inspired by them And these 3 things? They last much longer than the 10 days you're on the workation. I take benefit from such "time-outs" for more than half a year and feel more relaxed and inspired than after some 3-week vacations. Mission,Vision and Values - Why defining them is so empowering Thank you Sinead from the Dundalk Tourist Office for triggering a big thought! While delivering a training programme yesterday, I fell into conversation with Sinead on the tea break about #CustomerService and we pondered where has it gone? Is it not taught any more? Is it not considered important? Is there no time for that kind of detail? Sinead worries about sending tourists off to an attraction, and the possibly that they won't get the service they deserve. And it struck me that employees make decisions every single day on behalf of a business - decisions on how well to complete a task, how much effort to put in, how to treat customers, how to follow up - or not - and so much more that seriously effects the reputation of the product or service.  One of the simplest ways, I believe, to encourage employee autonomy, and the kind of high performance that is self driven, is to have Mission, Vision and Values clearly defined, and not only postered on the walls of the workplace, but nicely framed in a take-home version for the desks of hybrid workers! ➡️ Do I chase my manager to know if I should offer this service to the customer? No need. Our Values are about going the extra mile. I know what I have to do. ➡️ At a match in the UK I meet a lad from a great business that we could partner with. Should I follow up? Hold on, our Vision is all about entering new territories. Of course I should! ➡️ Our Mission is to move the dial. So that’s fairly clear then! I know my ideas are welcome, and I should suggest improvements to systems or processes. When I work with leaders on #strategy or #teamdevelopment or #communications, I often start right there, workshopping the definition (or the fresh re-definition) of Mission, Vision and Values. Diving into a different culture – Germany meets Australia First time arriving to Australia in Sydney last year, starting at our home in Frankfurt, we had a stop-over in Singapore, diving into an Asian melting pot, before moving on. And then Sydney. It felt like a mixture of a melting pot and somewhat being back to the known Western World with a UK feeling on the roads. But this was only the first impression. Us travelling to Australia is meanwhile like a part-time move, a commute between Sydney and Frankfurt, even if the commute takes almost two days. Family matters the most. Commuting, as we also want to be close to one of our daughters, who lives and works in Sydney. TCKs (Third Culture Kids) become TCK Adults. My second impression after having been there last year for a few weeks: Australians are aware about their national treasure - nature, monuments and wild life, and also about their national vulnerabilities, as there are wildfires, flooding events and heat. And with that, I guess, comes the respect and valuation of their first peoples (despite all the discussion around the lost referendum on October 14). I was very impressed, as I learned, that Australian first peoples have a lot of knowledge and wisdom to mitigate national vulnerabilities. And, that this wisdom is more and more actively utilized. A smart learning process, also to handle climate change challenges. Now, we are back here again for the holidays (and more) and I am excited to verify or correct my second impressions and to add new experiences. ⏭ Australia, we are back. And one more observation, especially with my German lenses. I really like the Australian mindset to, as Germans would say, “auch mal fünf gerade sein lassen”. ➡ And what about you? 3 weeks ago I officially became a coach working remotely from Spain. This weekend I explored San Sebastian, the most beautiful city. Despite the pic, the new life doesn't feel that glamorous yet. Mostly its admin, work and kids. Candidly - it's been a bit of a rough ride. But I try to keep these things in mind: -Vision: Am I living for myself? -North Star: Am I less stressed? -Prioritisation : Am I doing what's most important? -Iteration: Am I learning things? Some improvement needed on all fronts for sure - but i guess Rome wasn't built in a day. #reflections #coaching #productprinciples
