“The type of inertial fusion we’re pursuing has the best long-term economics,” Conner Galloway founder and CEO at Xcimer Energy Corporation. Congratulations to the Xcimer team on their $100 million Series A, which will put inertial fusion on the path to commercial deployment. Gigascale Capital is excited to be on this journey with you! Inertial fusion energy (IFE) is a proven science. In December 2022, the National Ignition Facility (NIF) confirmed that hitting a target with a high power laser can create a controlled fusion reaction. Now, Xcimer is working on the key problems required to turn this work into a source of unlimited clean energy. Xcimer's laser aims to deliver 5x-10x the power of the one used in the experiments. Why? This size laser makes everything easier. The target doesn’t have to be perfectly shaped making it possible to use larger targets. Larger targets create more net gain, which then enable you to run the process at a slower clock rate. Moving this tech from the lab and into the real world has immense promise. The technical risks are big (no one has built a laser this large before) and the potential impact is equally huge.  Huge rewards, big technical challenges. I’m in. Let’s build some lasers.

Huge congrats to Xcimer Energy Corporation on achieving this milestone on their journey toward delivering fusion power to the grid!! We at Wireframe Ventures have been so proud to support this brilliant team from the seed, and couldn't be more excited for what this $100M Series A will unlock. While deploying fusion power plants remains a decade+ long project, in just a few short years, the Xcimer team and the inertial fusion field as a whole has rapidly accelerated towards delivering fusion at commercial scale. Since the company was founded in 2022, inertial confinement has become the first fusion pathway to have achieved scientific breakeven by the NIF at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. With this funding, Xcimer will directly address many of the critical remaining challenges in taking laser-driven inertial fusion out of the lab -- including the efficiency of the laser architecture -- by building a prototype laser system with the world's largest nonlinear optical pulse compression system. At scale, Xcimer's laser architecture will produce 10x higher laser energy at 10x higher efficiency at 30x+ lower cost per joule than the NIF laser system. Fusion energy has the potential to provide abundant, carbon-free baseload power at low cost, and we are thrilled to see Xcimer leading the way to deliver what will be a cornerstone technology for the global fight against climate change.
