Last night I worked a police involved shooting… as expected, these events cause a dump of adrenaline, sometimes panic, and a fight/flight response as we load up all equipment and head to the scene (often in a rush) with limited information. On arrival we are met with an influx of personnel for briefings and plan of action. Cue the survival stress! Amongst everything happening and how hectic these investigations often are, there was one thing that stood out the most to me. Fire rescue was involved unfortunately, while processing those employees I was approached by the fire chief who’s main concern was the mental and emotional well-being of his crew given their exposure. 1- It was so refreshing to hear that because more often then not, the priority is the scene and the investigation (as long as you are physically okay) 2- He extended the resources to PD and anyone else who may need it. *****The point of this long post is as follows… A Trauma Informed Leader and his approach is what made the difference not just for me but everyone involved. All first responders deserve this******

Librarians play an active role in teaching media literacy. They shouldn’t be left out of the conversation when discussing how individual districts and schools can facilitate media literacy instruction. School librarians are effective at teaching students how to evaluate sources for bias, intended audience, and credibility for years. Media literacy looks beyond sources for research and teaches students to critically look at all media.
