More than one million medium- and heavy-duty trucks are expected to hit the highways by 2031. But as the fleet of commercial zero-emission vehicles begins to grow, the infrastructure needed to power these trucks is struggling to keep up. In response to this reality, a coalition of major truck manufacturers have launched an initiative to help speed the deployment of charging stations nationwide. In the latest episode of Sidley’s Accelerating Energy podcast, host and partner Kenneth Irvin speaks with Dawn Fenton, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs at Volvo Group North America, to discuss what businesses should know about the nascent zero-emission commercial transportation industry — and what Volvo Group North America and its partners are doing to accelerate electric-charging infrastructure development.

Electrification of trucks --> Transportation is nation’s top source of GHG, accounting for 38.1% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion, with largest contributors being light-duty trucks (37.0%), followed by freight trucks (22.9%) and passenger vehicles (20.7%), according to EPA https://lnkd.in/g2VrR5eW

My story this week for SAE International on expanding concern about the cost of installing charging infrastructure for commercial EVs - particularly long-haul tractor-trailers. One prominent study projects a nearly $1-trillion pricetag to install necessary charging for all types of electrified commercial vehicles. As with most things EV, not everyone agrees... Particular thanks to Loren McDonald, EV infrastructure source extraordinaire, for his thoughts and expertise.

The Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom has provided £300,000 in funding to Paua PINS (Private Infrastructure Network Solution) for a project to make EV infrastructure sharing a reality for fleets. The funding has been provided through the department’s Transport Decarbonisation Demonstrators programme, delivered by Innovate UK. Paua, Cenex, Oxfordshire County Council and Suffolk County Council will collaborate with leading fleets, industry bodies and software providers over a 10-month period to deliver the project. This comes after the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) recently discovered 62 per cent of fleets would consider co-operative agreements with other fleets to share EV charging infrastructure. Loved seeing this news! 🎉 Rhode Island reached a significant milestone this week by becoming the first state in the country to complete Phase 1 of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program's alternative fuel corridor. The NEVI Program aims to create a comprehensive and accessible EV charging network across the United States. It is key to accelerating EV adoption by ensuring that drivers have reliable access to charging infrastructure along all of the major transportation corridors. Rhode Island's achievement not only marks the installation of the 1,000th public EV charging station in the state but also underscores the state's leadership in advancing EV infrastructure. For fleet managers, this milestone means enhanced charging accessibility, paving the way for more efficient and widespread electric fleet operations. Let's celebrate this progress and continue to drive forward! #ElectricVehicles #EVCharging #Sustainability #FleetManagement #GreenEnergy #RhodeIsland #EVAdoption #CleanTransportation #MoveEV #NEVIProgram #Infrastructure https://lnkd.in/eByVptaZ

ALTERNATIVE ENERGY & EV NEWS: THE HIGHWAY WHERE TRUCKS WORK LIKE ELECTRIC TRAINS The project “Field trial eHighway on the BAB A1 in Schleswig-Holstein (FESH)” is a model trial for practical testing of the infrastructure with overhead hybrid trucks (OH trucks) as a possible technology for climate-neutral road freight transport. The German state of Schleswig-Holstein says it will pioneer a 6km stretch of electronic highway or eHighway test projects: overhead catenary wires, where electric trucks with pantographs can pull power directly from the grid.
