Harpreet Kalsi-Smith and I are delighted to launch our new program, Conversations that Count. Over the past 18 months we have facilitated conversations with small groups of people known to one another, to explore what is important to know in preparing for the end of life. These have been rich, deep, funny and at times tearful conversations. All of our conversations took place using a tailored methodology and with attention to creating a psychologically safe environment. Sharing food together helps to build bonds so our groups met over a meal, a coffee or a glass of wine in a comfortable, private setting. Outcomes from these conversations ranged from increasing people's willingness to speak about dying and death to communicating one's wishes to family or friends or formalising those wishes through an advanced care plan or other document. We have received such interest in this process that we have now designed a methodology suitable for use with care providers as well as individuals, families and community groups. This program will benefit anyone who will eventually face death (that is, all of us) but in particular for those who may be supporting a person at the end of life who wishes to improve their ability to become comfortable in talking about and preparing for death. Life is a precious gift and all too finite. Making space for the big and sometimes harder conversations and questions can help us to better care for ourselves and others when the time comes. #whatmattersmost #ageingwell  #conversationsthatcount#kindnessmatters #endoflifecare
