We've been working with a local drilling contractor and a major operator in the Azeri sector of the Caspian Sea to eliminate personnel from the red zone during routine operations. Our Sheaveless COBRA® control line manipulator arm reduced red zone risk exposure time for personnel on the rig floor associated with manually positioning control lines against the pipe. Using AERO™ reamers, our client successfully reamed while drilling a total of 6,363 ft. The technology supported smooth, issue-free casing installation. It also saved approximately 24 hours and $60K of rig time by eliminating a dedicated reamer run or the need to back ream out the hole. It should be everywhere but mainly offshore: Safety first” This case reminds me a company and an offshore platform where I used to work. And among the reasons that pushed me to leave is the irresponsible attitude of the management regarding similar cases where loss of production can justify derogations to use an out of service/damaged and obsolete crane.

Flexible hoses are in use on most offshore assets but, in general, the running of hoses does not appear to be well managed. Whilst whipchecks are normally used at hose connections, sometimes they are installed incorrectly and hoses are often routed along walkways and without any intermediate restraint, increasing the threat of injury or death from hose whip. Many are wound through or around structures, but this is insufficient to restrain a high- pressure hose that has been severed or disconnected.
