It's the joy in these workers' voices for me. This story by More Perfect Union is a powerful example of how federal investments—our public dollars—can advance the public good by creating dignified unionized jobs with a living wage and full benefits. These jobs, and the security they afford working families, were made possible by the massive funding available through the Inflation Reduction Act. Over the next several years, we'll likely see many endeavors similar to this, which is why Marguerite Casey Foundation launched our Public Dollars for Public Good (PDPG) initiative. PDPG is designed to support grant recipients organizing communities and unlocking federal funds in ways that help us all experience and reimagine what our world could be like if our public dollars were used to build a thriving multiracial democracy. Our inaugural PDPG funding provided more than $5M in general operating grants to fuel organizations advancing economic justice and ensuring federal investments like the Inflation Reduction Act reach communities that have long been excluded from access to these funds. Central to the success of our PDPG program, and stories like the one told by workers in this video, is the role of organizing. Worker organizing, in this case with Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), is central to ensuring public dollars make it into the pockets of working people. If all this is possible in Blue Oval City, in rural western Tennessee, it’s possible across the country if we organize to win it. Every worker and every community deserves as much.

**May Day**: - **Origins**: May Day, celebrated on May 1, has a long and varied history dating back millennia. The Celts of the British Isles believed May 1 to be the most important day of the year, marking the festival of Beltane. This festival symbolized the division of the year between light and dark, celebrating the return of life and fertility to the world. - **Maypole Tradition**: The maypole dance is associated with May Day. Villagers would find a maypole set up in towns or cities, adorned with colorful streamers and ribbons. Historically, the maypole dance originated as a fertility ritual, with the pole symbolizing male fertility and wreaths representing female fertility. - **International Workers' Day**: In the 19th century, May Day took on new meaning. It became International Workers' Day, emerging from the labor movement's fight for workers' rights and an eight-hour workday in the United States **The Haymarket Affair**: - **Background**: On May 4, 1886, a labor demonstration took place at Haymarket Square in Chicago, Illinois. Workers were striking for an eight-hour workday following events at the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, where one person was killed and many were injured. - **The Bombing**: During the peaceful rally, an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb at the police as they dispersed the meeting. The explosion and ensuing gunfire by the police resulted in the deaths of seven officers and at least four civilians. - **Legal Proceedings**: Eight anarchists were charged with the bombing. Although none of them threw the bomb, they were convicted of conspiracy. Seven were sentenced to death, and one received a 15-year prison term. The Haymarket affair is considered the origin of International Workers' Day (May 1) and marked a climax in the Great Upheaval among the working class in America **Labor Activism Today**: - **Historic Strikes**: Labor activism is on the rise, with over 457,000 workers participating in 315 strikes in the U.S. this year alone. These strikes have led to more than 7.4 million missed workdays, the highest level in almost a quarter century. - **Inequality and Leverage**: Soaring living costs and growing pay gaps between workers and executives have fueled labor movements. The tight U.S. labor market, with low unemployment rates and abundant job openings, gives workers leverage to challenge employers. - **Union Decline**: Despite stronger support for unions, union membership rates have been falling for decades. Only 6% of private sector workers belong to unions today, compared to 35% in 1953 In summary, May Day has ancient roots and evolved into International Workers' Day. The Haymarket Affair remains a pivotal moment in labor history, and today's labor activism continues to address inequality and fight for workers' rights. 🌸🔥👷♀️👷♂️

Throwback to a panel on Period Leaves we had on our Next Door Naari series at The Channel 46. I understand that different people might have different perspectives on this topic. But the one thing we can all agree upon is the need for open conversation on this topic and empathy in the workplace. Women should be able to confidently voice their period related woes without feeling awkward or embarrassed. And even if we don’t need mandated leave, we do need generous policies like flexi hours and perhaps even WFH - because there are women who truly struggle in those few days https://lnkd.in/dQdsMh6k
