"3D Scanning is too expensive!" "It's not in our budget to do that." "We don't see the benefit to balance the cost." We here this a lot from project owners, GC's, trades contractors and everyone in between. But the before writing off the thought of having this invaluable service provided, ask yourself a few questions: How much does a stainless steel platform extension cost? How much does a field crew cost to modify that extension that was built too large? How much does a hit to a fabricator's reputation cost? All of those answers are subjective, and truly unique to the company and the project, but I assure you it's substantial, and with the margins that most millwrights/fabricators are operating under, not good for your bottom line. These images shows the discrepancies between the provided CAD layout, and the scan data from our 3D scan performed onsite. CAD shows 5' 11 13/16" while the actual site is 4' 6 9/16". That's not an inconsequential difference. Equating to approximately 60 sq ft of additional platform space that just won't fit. Not only does this effect the platform, but also the proposed equipment that is meant to occupy this space. Specifically, laser scanning, also known as high-definition surveying (HDS) or #realitycapture, is a means of using a laser to map an area with high accuracy. On a construction site, laser scanning is used to capture detailed data, providing accurate information for every nook and cranny on a site.
