🛫 The Story Behind the Numbers 3 and 7: Airbus & Boeing 🛬
Have you ever noticed that Airbus and Boeing aircraft have distinctive numbers in their names? Let’s delve into the reasons behind these symbolic choices.
Airbus opted for the number 3 to kick off its commercial aircraft series, starting with the pioneering A300. This model could accommodate up to 300 passengers, hence its name. Since then, each new generation of aircraft has followed this tradition, incrementally increasing the number (A310, A320, A330…), except for the A380, which was designed with the Asian market in mind, where the number 8 symbolizes prosperity.
Boeing, on the other hand, chose the number 7 for its commercial airliners, beginning with the iconic 707. The number 7 is often associated with luck and completeness, which may have influenced their decision to continue this sequence (737, 747, 777, 787…). Additionally, at Boeing, the hundreds digit indicates the business sector, with 700 reserved for commercial aircraft.
These choices go beyond mere marketing—they reflect the history and culture of these two aerospace giants. Next time you see an Airbus or a Boeing, remember that there’s a story behind each number!
